COLUMBIA, S.C. – Zuri, the admired lion and significant attraction at Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, has sadly passed away announced the zoo. Turning 20 only recently, Zuri had been a lodger of the zoo since 2005 after his birth at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Kansas.
Zuri was widely cherished for his morning roars that, to many zoo-goers, signified the commencement of a new day. The zoo authorities took to social media to pay tribute and said, “His legacy and memory will forever hold a special place in our hearts.”
The African lion sired 13 cubs throughout his life which, according to the zoo, has “significantly contributed to the population of African lions.” In the aftermath of Zuri’s passing, two lionesses, Thabisa and Lindelani, who were under care alongside Zuri, will be returning to their habitat for the public to visit.
News of the loss incited an outpouring of heartfelt condolences and expressions of love for Zuri on social media, underscoring how treasured he was by visitors and the local community. One such comment read, “Zuri lived up to his name which means ‘Beautiful’ he was a gorgeous lion. May he rest in peace.”
Riverbanks Zoo is in the process of commemorating its 50th anniversary this year and expressed that Zuri’s longevity underscores the remarkable care that their staff strive to bestow upon all animals at the facility.
