COLUMBIA, SC: A Month to Honor Our Veterans
Great news is buzzing around Columbia, South Carolina! Governor Henry McMaster has officially declared December as “Wreaths Across America Month”. This special proclamation is all about recognizing a heartwarming initiative dedicated to honoring our Veterans, not just here in South Carolina, but across the entire nation. What a wonderful way to shine a light on those who have served our country!
Community Coming Together
This past Monday, the spirit of camaraderie was alive and well as Representatives Micah Caskey and Chris Wooten presented the proclamation to the local coordinator of Wreaths Across America, the inspiring Carol Davis. At the presentation, Davis expressed, “It’s important for all of us to recognize and remember our Veterans and let them know that we care, and to remember those who have passed. This gives us an opportunity at all Veteran cemeteries and where Veterans are buried throughout SC to honor them. This proclamation is a sign that SC loves her Veterans.”
A Nationwide Tribute on December 14th
Mark your calendars, folks! On December 14th, over two million volunteers from this respected organization will be laying wreaths on the graves of Veterans all across the United States. Here in Columbia, a remarkable gathering is set to take place at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery at noon. That day, over 13,000 wreaths will be lovingly placed to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. This event is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for our freedom.
Teaching the Next Generation
Davis urges everyone to participate, saying, “And it’s important for us to come there. As individuals and families. And bring the children. We need to remember those that served, honor those that are serving now, and to teach our children that freedom is not free.” This is not just about laying wreaths; it’s about instilling values of gratitude and remembrance in our younger generations.

He noted, “I’ve been part of the ‘Wreaths Across America’ in D.C. at Arlington, seeing the massive amounts of people show up to honor our Veterans. And to see that on a lower level, you don’t usually see that at a state level… it’s an honor as an old Marine to see some folks that are really still…I say patriotic, but SC just loves their Veterans, and it’s such an honor to be part of that.” What a touching sentiment!
