As the chilly temperatures creep in and the festive season begins, it’s time to start thinking about those cozy decorations that make our homes feel warm and inviting. But hold on—before you dig out the holiday lights and fire up the space heaters, there’s something really important to consider: fire safety!
According to experts, the risk of fire increases during the holidays. With families across the city turning on their space heaters for the first time this season, it’s essential to be aware of the potential hazards. Mike DeSumma from the Columbia Richland Fire Department emphasizes that “safety has to be top of mind” when using any heating equipment.
DeSumma stresses that the same attention you give when cooking should also apply to space heaters. “Once you turn those heaters on, you can’t leave them unattended!” he cautions. Make sure your heater is resting on a flat surface to prevent any disasters. If you’re considering using your fireplace, make sure to keep an eye on it too. Inspection is key! Always get your chimney checked out and heating devices inspected every season to ensure they’re functioning safely.
For those of you who enjoy having a real Christmas tree, there’s another important task on your to-do list: watering your tree! DeSumma reminds us that a dry tree can turn into “live kindling” in your home. Always keep your tree hydrated to keep it looking lush and green, and most importantly, safe!
It’s time to bust out those twinkling lights and delightful decorations, but don’t just mindlessly hang them up! This is your chance to prevent potential fire hazards! DeSumma advises checking the wiring of your lights before hanging them up. “The first step when you pull those decorations out, is to lay them out and take a good look at the wiring.” After some years of use, wires can become frayed or damaged, so look for signs of wear and tear. If something doesn’t look right, that’s your cue to replace it!
What’s a festive home without the flicker of candles? While they provide a wonderful ambiance, be cautious! If you’re using traditional candles with an open flame, it’s absolutely essential to never leave them unattended. Instead, consider battery-powered candles as a safer alternative. These can provide that same cozy glow without any of the worry!
As we embrace the holiday season and enjoy the festivities, don’t forget to pass these important safety tips along to your family and friends. Fire safety isn’t just about protecting your home; it’s about ensuring the safety of everyone you care about. So let’s keep the season merry and bright—without the fright of a fire! Your home should be a place to celebrate, relax, and create joyous memories, not worry and concern.
