Planned for a sprawling 65-acre property near Dreher Shoals Road, the Water Walk will blend single-family homes tailored for both purchase and rental with residences designed specifically for older generations. The council isn’t stopping there; they envision a vibrant commercial area and a charming walking village where residents can shop and socialize. Mayor Bill Danielson emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “We need the businesses here; we don’t have property tax; we’re not making any money on the residential properties.” It’s clear that the push for economic growth is at the forefront of the council’s agenda.

Overcoming Past Challenges

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the Water Walk has been on the table. Previously, the project faced pushback from residents who feared it might change the character of their beloved town. However, after the first reading approval on September 17, optimism has resurfaced. Mayor Danielson noted that the town and developers are now better equipped to tackle community feedback and make adjustments to the plans.

We approved it at the first reading with a handful of significant items to be negotiated, so we are working with them now to negotiate those to get those,” said the mayor. This collaborative effort is focused on ensuring that the project aligns with the desires of the citizens.

The Potential Impact

As the plans continue to unfold, the projected number of homes to be built stands between 500 and 550. If all goes well, the development could become a bustling hub—offering not just housing, but also the commercial spaces that Irmo has been lacking.

The next step in this process is a public hearing scheduled for October 15, where the council will debate the second reading of the proposal. This meeting is crucial, as it will give residents another opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns. As always, active participation from the community will play a vital role in shaping the outcome of this project.

As Irmo stands on the brink of potential change, many residents are cautiously optimistic.
