Lexington is coming together to celebrate the life of a truly remarkable woman, Virginia A. McCuen, affectionately known as “Gina,” who passed away on September 15, 2024. Gina, 81, left this world surrounded by her loving family after enduring health challenges due to Multiple Sclerosis.
Friends, family, and community members are invited to remember Gina at a memorial service, which will be held at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Lexington on Saturday, September 28 at 11 a.m. Following the service, there will be a visitation to allow everyone to share stories and celebrate the vibrant life she led.
Known for her unwavering spirit and commitment to her community, Gina was a source of inspiration for many. She was not just a local business owner; she was a powerhouse of compassion and dedication. Gina started her journey as a franchise owner of Snelling and Snelling in Lexington back in 1982, paving the way for future generations. Managing her business with flair, she consistently ranked in the top 100 out of 300 Snelling offices nationwide and successfully placed over 1,700 people into jobs, cumulatively earning them more than $28 million.
Against all odds, Gina developed the Victoria Square business complex during a time when skeptics claimed “nothing is happening in Lexington.” Her vision and hard work paid off, establishing a thriving hub in downtown Lexington that continues to serve the community today.
Gina’s contributions didn’t stop at business. She was deeply committed to several civic, professional, and cultural organizations, always taking on leadership roles. During her illustrious career, she received numerous accolades, including the Columbia Woman of the Year in 1973 and the Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Award in 1985.
Her spirit of volunteerism was evident through her active participation in groups like the Lexington Kiwanis Club, where she proudly served as a Lieutenant Governor and was recognized as “Kiwanian of the Year” in 2000. She even made history by becoming the first woman president of the St. Andrews Kiwanis Club! Gina was also one of the founding members of the Foster Care Review Board and dedicated years to supporting youth through organizations such as the Girl Scouts of America.
Gina was a firm believer in education, earning her Master’s in Guidance and Counseling from Ohio University in 1967 and a Bachelor’s in Religion and Philosophy from Barton College in 1965. Her time at Barton was notable; she was a cheerleader and a founding member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. Even years later, she maintained her allegiance to the college, being honored as its 2001 Alumnus of the Year and receiving the Golden Violet Award for 50 years of loyalty to her sorority.
At the heart of all her accomplishments was Gina’s love for her family. She was a proud mother to her daughters, Elizabeth Smith Trenbeath and Virginia “Ginger” Smith Davis, who fondly remember her as a role model and a source of support. Her legacy continues through her children and her cherished grandchildren, along with her stepchildren.
Gina leaves behind a community forever changed by her relentless pursuit of justice and excellence. She was known to her friends as vibrant, passionate, and always ready to lend a hand. In her honor, the family requests that anyone wishing to make a gesture of sympathy consider contributing to St. Stephens Lutheran Church or the South Carolina Ballet.
As Lexington prepares to remember Gina, her spirit will undoubtedly continue to inspire fellow citizens to give their all in everything they pursue. The legacy of Virginia “Gina” McCuen is one that will be woven into the fabric of this wonderful community for generations to come.
