Columbia's Villa Tronco Set to Celebrate 85 Years of Culinary Legacy in 2025

Columbia Celebrates 85 Years of Villa Tronco Magic!

Columbia, get ready to roll out the red carpet! Villa Tronco, a gem in our community since 1940, is gearing up to celebrate a fantastic milestone—its 85th anniversary! That’s right, soon after the New Year, this beloved Italian restaurant will have served countless plates of pasta, pizzas, and warm hospitality since it first opened its doors all those decades ago.

A Taste of History

Villa Tronco began its journey as a humble fruit store back in 1940, founded by the Tronco family. The restaurant has since transformed into a full-fledged Italian establishment, still proudly family-owned today, under the fourth and fifth generations. Can you believe it?

The story starts with Sadie Tronco, who moved to Columbia as a child. Her family, led by Charles Carnaggio, owned one of the first fruit stores in town, setting the stage for what would become an incredible culinary legacy. Sadie’s love for cooking grew during World War II as she fed homesick soldiers stationed in Columbia, introducing them to dishes like spaghetti and meatballs, a favorite that remains on the menu today.

Mama Tronco’s Legacy Lives On

As we reflect on these 85 years, we can’t forget about the heart and soul of Villa Tronco—Mama Tronco herself. Even in her late 80s, Mama Tronco was a regular, connecting with customers and family. Her timeless recipes still fill the restaurant’s kitchen, nourishing us with flavors that tell a story of love and tradition.

Today, the restaurant is run by Joe and Carmella Roche, with the next generation—Tripp and Donovan—poised to take on the mantle. Tripp beautifully sums it up, saying, “Eighty-five years is not just a milestone; it’s a testament to the love and loyalty of our customers and the passion of our family.”

Exciting Plans Ahead

As Villa Tronco approaches its anniversary, the team is planning a series of spectacular initiatives to celebrate this remarkable journey. First, the restaurant will collaborate with S.C. History and Archives and Historic Columbia to install an official historical marker at 1213 Blanding Street. Scheduled for installation in June 2025, this marker will honor the restaurant’s deep roots in South Carolina’s cultural and culinary history.

Furthermore, thanks to the City of Columbia, a significant intersection has even been dubbed “Villa Tronco Way”. How cool is that? The restaurant’s iconic barroom will also be renamed the Carolina Room, highlighting its new partnership with the University of South Carolina.

Community Spirit Shines Bright

Villa Tronco is not just about food; it values community connection! The restaurant plans to reinstate its annual Italian Festival after a decade-long break! Plus, they continue to support local events and revitalization projects that enhance the community’s charm.

On January 13, 2025, Villa Tronco will throw a private bash to honor its legacy with traditions and flavors from the past. They invite everyone to the festivities at 1208 Washington Street, requesting cocktail attire for this special occasion. But that’s not all—customers can expect celebratory menus, unique events, and exclusive offerings throughout the year!

Looking Towards the Future

This 85th anniversary is a perfect opportunity to reflect on Villa Tronco’s past and look forward to the future. It’s a wonderful reminder of how a family’s love for food, community, and tradition can stand the test of time. As we celebrate, we’re grateful for the delicious meals and memorable moments that have made Villa Tronco a cherished part of Columbia’s fabric. So, get ready, Columbia—let’s raise a glass and dig into some delicious Italian fare as we honor 85 years of incredible memories!
