Columbia's Villa Tronco Set to Celebrate 85 Years of Italian American Tradition in 2025

Columbia’s Villa Tronco: Celebrating 85 Years of Italian Amercian Delight!

Columbia is getting ready for a huge celebration as Villa Tronco, our beloved Italian restaurant, gears up to mark its 85th anniversary in 2025! That’s right, folks! This cherished spot has been serving up authentic dishes since 1940, making it not just a restaurant but a true cornerstone of our community’s culinary landscape.

A Bit of History

The journey of Villa Tronco began in 1940 when the Tronco family opened a fruit store. Can you believe it? Fast forward a few delicious decades, and today it is one of Columbia’s most iconic restaurants. The family has passionately maintained this establishment, now in the hands of the fourth and fifth generations. Pretty impressive, huh? It’s like watching a family tree grow, branch by flavorful branch!

Sadie Tronco, also known as “Mama Tronco,” was a trailblazer who not only served her family but also a host of soldiers stationed at nearby Fort Jackson during World War II. These homesick troops were longing for a taste of home, and Mama gave them exactly that with her spaghetti and meatballs. It wasn’t long before she introduced pizza to Columbia’s culinary scene, at first giving it away because many didn’t even know what it was. How adorable is that?

Why Villa Tronco is Loved

Villa Tronco is deeply woven into the fabric of Columbia with its rich history and delicious offerings. From the iconic spaghetti to the mouth-watering pizza, every dish tells a story passed from generation to generation. And guess what? Mama Tronco was still involved in the restaurant well into her late 80s, embodying loyalty and a passion for food that has made the eatery a local gem.

Even after her passing in 1988, the spirit of Mama Tronco lives on through the restaurant, now overseen by her grandchildren Joe and Carmella Roche. What a sweet legacy! Tripp and Donovan, Joe’s sons, are gearing up to join the family business after finishing their studies, ensuring that the love and tradition continue for future generations.

Looking Ahead: Exciting Plans for 2025

To commemorate this big milestone, Villa Tronco has some exciting initiatives lined up! For starters, they’re partnering with the South Carolina History and Archives and Historic Columbia to install a historical marker at 1213 Blanding Street, honoring their contribution to the cultural landscape. This will officially recognize Villa Tronco as a significant part of South Carolina’s culinary heritage. Can you believe it? A piece of history right in the heart of Columbia!

Plus, thanks to the City of Columbia, they’ve officially named the corners of Main and Sumter Streets “Villa Tronco Way”. How incredibly fitting! And inside the restaurant, the iconic bar room? It’s being rebranded as the Carolina Room, blending tradition and modernity—a nod to their new partnership with the University of South Carolina.

Celebrating with the Community

In January 2025, Villa Tronco is throwing a private event to kick off their anniversary celebrations with style! They’re calling all friends for a night filled with food, laughter, and cherished memories. While it’s going to be a private affair, you can still join in on the excitement as they’ll be rolling out special menus and commemorative events throughout the year. Don’t miss out!

The restaurant is also setting its sights on reviving the beloved annual Italian Festival after a ten-year pause—what a treat for all food lovers in Columbia!

A Testament to Tradition

As we gear up for 85 years of love, loyalty, and unforgettable dining experiences at Villa Tronco, we can’t help but feel grateful for the sense of community it has fostered over the years. As Tripp Roche said, “Eighty-five years is not just a milestone; it’s a testament to the love and loyalty of our customers.” This family’s dedication to keeping Mama Tronco’s legacy alive warms the heart, don’t you think?

For a taste of history and authentic Italian cuisine, mark your calendars! Villa Tronco is ready to welcome guests both old and new on this adventure, ensuring that every meal feels like home.
