Baseball Fun in Columbia: USC’s Week Highlights and Low Points

Columbia, SC – In a week filled with ups and downs, the University of South Carolina baseball team managed to split their week with a 2-2 record. The Gamecocks began the week strong, but faced challenges as they ended up against the mighty Mississippi State. Let’s take a closer look at the games played and what’s ahead for the team!

A Crushing Victory Against Presbyterian

On April 1, the Gamecocks kicked off the week with an emphatic win over Presbyterian, defeating them by a whopping 11-1 in what was a breezy seven-inning game. The offensive fireworks put the Gamecocks on the board to start the week in a big way, showcasing their potential to dominate.

First Game Against Mississippi State – A Win!

Fast forward to April 4, and things looked promising again as South Carolina won their first game against Mississippi State, wrapping it up with a solid 7-3 victory. One name that stood out was Beau Hollins. The freshman from Lexington, SC, had an impressive four-hit game that included a spectacular two-run home run in the fourth inning, earning a spotlight as he tallied his second four-hit game of the season.

Things Took a Turn

However, the Gamecocks faced a rude awakening in the subsequent matches against Mississippi State. April 5 saw them lose 4-11, and unfortunately, the rough stretch didn’t stop there. On April 6, they faced another defeat, this time with a score of 0-6. The back-to-back losses put a damper on their earlier triumphs, leaving the team needing to regroup.

Current Stats – The Big Picture

With these games in the books, the Gamecocks now hold an overall record of 19 wins and 14 losses, with a Southeastern Conference (SEC) record that stands at 2 wins and 10 losses. On the home front, they boast a robust 15-6 record, but away from home, they have struggled, sitting at 3-6. The team is in a current two-game losing streak, which they are eager to shake off in their upcoming matches.

Spotlight Players

Several players shone brightly throughout the week. Beau Hollins, with his impressive .325 batting average, is quickly becoming a household name among Gamecock fans, tallying two home runs and 11 RBIs this season. Matthew Becker has also caught the eye, showcasing his skills in relief pitching by striking out an impressive seven batters in just 4.2 innings during the last game against Mississippi State. With a career total of 245 strikeouts, he currently sits second on the team with 46 strikeouts this season.

Henry Kaczmar also had a fantastic performance on April 5 against Mississippi State, hitting two home runs, and leading the Gamecocks in SEC play with a stellar .412 batting average.

Sweeney Shining Bright

Additionally, Brendan Sweeney’s performance cannot be overlooked. He earned a three-inning save during the April 4 game against Mississippi State, where he didn’t allow a hit and struck out four batters. Sweeney’s impressive season stats now include five saves and 23 strikeouts over 15.2 innings.
