IRMO, SC – A quiet afternoon turned into a chaotic scene on Hedgefield Court as a dispute between neighbors escalated to a tragic shooting, resulting in the death of a young man and the arrest of a woman on multiple serious charges. The local community is in shock as the details surrounding this incident come to light.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, the shooting occurred around 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Officers rushed to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire in the normally peaceful cul-de-sac. Upon arrival, deputies were quickly directed to a man, later identified as James R. Outland, a 22-year-old resident of Irmo, who had been shot in the upper body.
Deputies immediately provided medical assistance until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived. Outland was transported to a local hospital, but sadly, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after reaching the medical facility.
The alleged shooter, identified as Charmika Wright, a 46-year-old woman living close by, was still at the scene when deputies arrived. They apprehended her without incident. Wright has since been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. According to the sheriff’s department, the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the two neighbors, although further details of what that disagreement involved have not been released.
Wright was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where she remains in custody with no bond currently set. A bond hearing has been conducted, and she is scheduled to appear in court again on January 31, 2025.
This incident has left the local community shaken. Neighbors expressed feelings of disbelief, as such violence is not typical in their area. Many remarked on the importance of neighborly relationships and the need for communication to prevent conflicts from escalating.
“It’s just heartbreaking to see something like this happen so close to home,” said one neighbor. “We never thought something like this could occur right here on our street.”
As the investigation continues, local residents are left grappling with what happened just steps from their front doors. The sheriff’s department has emphasized that more information will be shared as it becomes available, reassuring the community that they are actively looking into the circumstances that led up to this tragic outcome.
Richland County is working to ensure safety and support for anyone affected by this distressing event. The sheriff’s office encourages anyone with additional information to reach out and help with their inquiries.
As always, during such challenging times, support from friends, family, and neighbors can play a crucial role in healing. Local counseling services are available for anyone who may need someone to talk to about the emotional impact of this incident.
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep you updated with any new developments regarding this heartbreaking story. Stay safe, Irmo!
