In a heartbreaking turn of events, a man from the Midlands lost his life on Wednesday afternoon in a tragic head-on crash involving an SUV and a pickup truck. This incident has left the local community in shock and mourning.
The unfortunate accident took place around 4:15 p.m. on S.C. 120, also known as Pinewood Road. Cornelius Mack, a 58-year-old resident of Sumter County, was driving a shiny 2022 Ford F-150 northbound when disaster struck. The Ford collided head-on with a 2015 GMC Acadia that was traveling south, right near the intersection with Coby Road.
Following the impact, Mack’s pickup veered off the road and crashed into a ditch. Sadly, despite emergency services responding swiftly to the scene, Mack succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker. It’s just one of those instances where you wish things could have turned out differently.
In the other vehicle, the driver of the GMC Acadia sustained injuries and had to be airlifted to Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia. As of now, specific details about that driver’s condition haven’t been disclosed, leaving friends and family anxious for updates.
Fortunately, it appears that both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles, which means no one else was injured in this accident. However, as the investigation continues, authorities have yet to determine what led to the collision. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office are currently looking into various factors, and they are appealing to the public for patience as they work to gather full details.
This tragic event is a solemn reminder of the importance of road safety. According to the state Department of Public Safety, a troubling 648 people have already lost their lives on South Carolina roads this year, and the state recorded a total of 1,030 road fatalities in 2023. In Sumter County alone, there have been 12 fatalities due to crashes this year, which is sadly reflective of a troubling trend.
Every life lost has a profound impact on families and communities, raising significant concerns about driving safety and the need for more awareness on the roads. Such tragic incidents urge us all to buckle up and stay alert while driving, as a moment’s distraction can lead to devastating outcomes.
Members of the Sumter County community are coming together to support each other in the wake of this sorrowful news. Local residents express their heartfelt condolences and support for Mack’s family during this difficult time. It’s a reminder that these incidents can happen to anyone at any time and that we must be vigilant on the roads.
Those who knew Mack remember him as a kind-hearted person who brightened the lives of those around him. His untimely death has left a void in the hearts of many who will always cherish the memories shared with him. This event serves as a call for everyone to take a step back and appreciate the fragility of life and the significance of every journey taken.
The investigation into this tragic crash remains ongoing, and authorities will continue to update the public as more details are known. As we move forward, let’s each do our part to drive safely and keep our roads a safer place for everyone.
