For three-and-a-half years, The Toasty Hot Spot has been a beloved brunch spot in downtown Columbia, known for its imaginative morning dishes and unique takes on soul food. However, change is in the air as the restaurant of inventive fare prepares to relocate to a new space in Five Points due to a development project that will bring a shiny new headquarters to the area for the Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union.
Currently nestled on 1305 Lady St., The Toasty Hot Spot has gained quite the reputation for its creative spins on brunch staples. Who could resist the mouthwatering oxtail birria tacos overflowing with cheese or the hearty Gullah grits bowls topped with the works? Owner and founder Sai Williams expressed her mixed feelings about having to make this transition. “After a lot of tears and emotions, I’m just happy to be where we’re at now,” Williams shared, excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.
The restaurant will officially open its doors at 2002 Greene St. on November 4, marking a fresh chapter in its journey. “I have a new home for my employees,” Williams mentioned, emphasizing her dedication to her team. The new location, which previously housed Mediterranean quick-service eatery Pita Pit, offers a spacious 1,400-square-foot area allowing for indoor dining, which is a notable upgrade from the current setup. Right now, it’s all about being excited for the possibilities!
Despite the challenges presented by the development choices of the credit union, Williams remained resilient and optimistic. “Sadly, it wasn’t our intention to relocate…but the owner, I’m assuming, didn’t want my business there,” she reflected on the situation. Finding a new location wasn’t an easy task; however, she focused her efforts on scouting for a fitting new home, and her hard work is finally paying off.
The new and improved Toasty Hot Spot promises even more for its loyal patrons and future guests. Aside from continuing to serve its famous brunch favorites, you can also expect the addition of mimosas on the menu. Who doesn’t love a good brunch accompanied by a bubbly drink?
“We’re going to offer everything that we already offer,” Williams confirms. “We can just give way more quality service.” Higher quality, updated dining experiences are on the horizon, making this move not just a change of location but a leap into exciting opportunities.
Columbia has seen its fair share of culinary shifts recently. Alongside the Toasty Hot Spot’s move, other establishments like the Good Life Cafe closed its doors, which was known for its plant-forward menu. Just look at the bustling atmosphere at the South Carolina State Fair this week, where food vendors are seeing huge crowds seeking deep-fried delights and fair treats. It’s clear that the community is always eager for new flavors and experiences.
While changes can be bittersweet, they often lead to something even more wonderful. As Columbia’s culinary scene continues to evolve, it’s heartening to see business owners like Sai Williams taking the leap to ensure that they bring the best to the community.
