Enjoy a tiki cocktail experience at The Dragon Room in Vista.
The Dragon Room in Vista is introducing a tiki-themed menu this February, spearheaded by restaurateur Kristian Niemi. The new menu features vibrant, island-inspired dishes and drinks, including a beloved Tiki Week event. The restaurant aims to deliver a unique dining experience, blending Asian favorites with tiki delights. Tiki Feast will kick off the celebrations, showcasing traditional Filipino dishes and cocktails. The event promises an exciting culinary adventure for locals looking to enjoy a taste of the tropics right in their hometown.
Get ready, Vista! A local gem, The Dragon Room, is about to take your taste buds on a delightful vacation this February with an all-new tiki-themed menu! Known for its scrumptious Asian fare, this hotspot will sprinkle a bit of island flair into its offerings, and it promises to be as fun as it sounds.
Behind this exciting transformation is restaurateur Kristian Niemi, a familiar face in the town’s culinary scene. In addition to running The Dragon Room, he is also the creative force behind popular spots like Black Rooster in West Columbia and Bourbon located on Columbia’s Main Street. With his passion for unique food experiences, it’s no wonder he’s bringing a dash of tiki delight to The Dragon Room, which opened its doors at 803 Gervais Street just this past June.
The Dragon Room will now be one of only two restaurants in the area focusing on tiki-themed cuisine and cocktails, with Urban Tiki, found in The Grand bowling alley/bar, being the only other venue. Tiki bars are known for their playful rum-based concoctions, like the Mai Tai and the Zombie, along with vibrant, kitschy decor inspired by Polynesian culture. The tiki craze began in the 1940s, thanks to Donn Beach’s bar, Don The Beachcomber, that opened in Hollywood in 1933. Now, it’s making a spectacular return to Vista in a contemporary twist!
One of the highlights of this new venture is the beloved Tiki Week, which previously took place as a pop-up event at Bourbon. Now, it’s moving to The Dragon Room, set to kick off on February 4. This annual event was started by Niemi back in 2015 and has quickly become something locals look forward to. Expect a week filled with enticing tiki-inspired menus featuring bold flavors and island vibes to match!
To celebrate the launch of Tiki Week, a special event called the Tiki Feast will take place on February 3 from 6-8 p.m. Inspired by Filipino Kamayan traditions, this dinner will showcase a delightful spread that includes dishes like slow-roasted hog and coconut-braised chicken adobo. Tickets for this mouthwatering experience are priced at $45 and include not only the full dinner but also a welcome tiki cocktail. Keep in mind, seating is limited to just 50 guests, so it’s advisable to snag your spot early!
As part of this tiki-themed revamp, The Dragon Room will also be introducing dishes inspired by the tiki tradition, including a pu pu platter, which is an appetizer tray featuring an assortment of Chinese and Hawaiian favorites like meat and seafood. However, Kristian Niemi has made it clear that while there will be some elements of island decor popping up, the primary focus will remain on delivering delicious tiki eats alongside their already-beloved Asian menu.
At the helm of the kitchen will be head chef Alex Strickland, who previously cooked up delights at Black Rooster. Meanwhile, David Adedokun, who has experience from The War Mouth, will be shaking up the bar with creative tiki cocktails that will surely be a hit!
With Tiki Week and the Tiki Feast approaching fast, Vista is in for a treat. So, if you’ve been searching for a way to spice up your dining experience, The Dragon Room is where you’ll want to be starting this February. Embrace the playful, vibrant flavors and get ready to enjoy a taste of the tropics right in your hometown! Don’t forget to share the festive vibes with your friends; after all, tiki is all about enjoying good company and good food!
