Get ready, Columbia! As the festive season approaches, there’s a magical treat waiting for you at The Township Auditorium this Thanksgiving week. Ann Brodie’s Carolina Ballet is presenting the beloved holiday classic, “The Nutcracker.” With performances on Wednesday, November 27 at 10 a.m., Friday, November 29 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, December 1 at 3 p.m., it’s time to snag your tickets for a holiday experience unlike any other!
This isn’t just any rendition of “The Nutcracker”; it’s the *only* full-length production of the show in Columbia featuring a full orchestra and chorus! The talented Columbia Festival Orchestra, conducted by the talented Neil Casey, will fill the auditorium with the enchanting score of Tchaikovsky, creating a perfect backdrop for this timeless dance tale. And it gets better—joining the ballet will be over 150 performers, including local dancers, guest artists, and a chorus from the Capella Pueri of St. Peter’s Catholic School under the direction of Jordan DeRouen.
“The Nutcracker” tells a magical tale of a Christmas party filled with delightful surprises—think toy soldiers, dancing dolls, and an adventure through a mystical land. Clara, the young heroine, must help her enchanted Nutcracker defeat the malicious Rat King. Once victorious, he transforms into a dashing prince, whisking Clara away to the dreamy Kingdom of Sweets where she meets the mesmerizing Sugar Plum Fairy.
This year’s production features an exciting list of exceptional talent. Sakura Oka will dazzle as the Sugar Plum Fairy, bringing her years of training and experience to life on stage—she’s even an Artist in Residence for Carolina Ballet! Opposite her, Brandon Penn takes on the role of her charming Cavalier.
The excitement continues with local star Rebecca McLean portraying Clara, while Leonardo Victorino will play her Nutcracker Prince. You might recognize him from his captivating performances with Diablo Ballet in California. And don’t forget about Jimmy Moon as Herr Drosselmeyer, the mysterious toymaker guiding Clara through her enchanting journey!
We can’t overlook the contributions of local dance schools—like the Toy Soldiers who will grace the stage with choreography reminiscent of the Rockettes, thanks to the direction of Deanna Patterson from the Patterson School of Dance. These young performers are keeping the spirit of dance alive and well in Columbia!
A special touch this season is the recognition of first responders and their families during the Friday evening performance. It’s a wonderful way to honor those who serve our community while enjoying a remarkable show.
Tickets are going fast, so don’t wait too long! You can reserve your seat by calling The Township at 803-576-2350 or through Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000. There are special rates available for groups, so consider a night out with family and friends. Here’s a quick look at ticket prices:
