As the leaves turned a gorgeous shade of amber and families across the country gathered around their tables, the heartwarming spirit of Thanksgiving shone brightly in Columbia, South Carolina. This year, despite the soaring prices of Thanksgiving dinners that many families are grappling with, local churches came together to ensure that the spirit of giving was alive and well. The result? Nearly 1,000 people in need were fed, showcasing a lovely blend of community support and holiday cheer!
On Thursday, the 34th Annual Robert D. Keeder Interfaith Thanksgiving Dinner welcomed nearly 500 people into its warm embrace. Volunteers—many of whom took a break from their holiday plans—came together to serve up heartwarming favorites like turkey, ham, and a delightful assortment of sides and desserts. It was a feast for the senses and a reminder of the kindness that exists within the community.
Among those who joined in for the meal was James Shannon, who shared a heart-wrenching story of his journey. “No one plans to be homeless, it just happens,” he reflected, noting how a series of tragedies led him and his family to this point. After losing his mother and having his younger brother taken away, James expressed deep gratitude for the kindness offered by strangers and volunteers alike. “I appreciate everything everyone does for me including this right here and it’s not just me; it’s everyone,” said Shannon with a heartfelt smile.
The echoes of appreciation were felt as other guests shared their stories. Crystal Hammons, another dinner attendee, spoke about the challenges she faces every day. “It’s hard to get a meal, you know, during the days,” she shared. After experiencing a series of medical issues and struggles with mental health, the weight of her story was palpable. “I’ve been experiencing homelessness for a year now,” Hammons revealed, her voice heavy with emotion.
Crystal’s story resonated with many in attendance, shining a light on the very real challenges some face. Yet, at that moment, being surrounded by others brought a glimmer of hope and connection, emphasizing that no one is truly alone. The warmth of the community was evident throughout the event.
On that memorable day, Chappelle Memorial AME Church also opened its doors to serve hot Thanksgiving meals. This outreach program, known as the Edith General Annual Thanksgiving Day Community Outreach Dinner, has been a cherished tradition for more than three decades. The church’s mission, as Pastor Michael Buckson explained, is to show people that there is still kindness in the world. “Our being here today shows people there is still kindness in the world,” he proudly declared.
The event was organized this year by Pastor Buckson’s daughter Diane LeBrew, who emphasized the importance of continuing her mother’s legacy of service and compassion. “She would be so proud that her legacy lives on,” stated LeBrew. Her mother often said, “let the works of her hands speak for her,” a motto that rings true in every grateful smile that filled the room.
As the aroma of turkey and pies lingered in the air, it was clear that the spirit of Thanksgiving would continue beyond just one day. The community can look forward to the next holiday meal planned for Christmas at the Basilica of St. Peter Catholic Church, reminding everyone that together, we can all make a difference in each other’s lives.
In a world where kindness can sometimes feel overshadowed, the people of Columbia, S.C., have shown that they are willing to extend a hand to those in need, proving once again that the true spirit of the holidays lies in love, compassion, and community togetherness.
