Sunny Skies and Solidarity: Join Midland’s Fight Against Alzheimer’s

Midland is gearing up for a heartwarming event that combines sunshine, community, and a dedication to a worthy cause. This Saturday, October 19, the city will transform into a sea of purple as residents join together for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Taking place at Segra Park in the bustling BullStreet District, this annual event is more than just a walk; it’s a meaningful way to come together and show support for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

A Glimpse at the Weather

As participants lace up their walking shoes in preparation for the event, they can look forward to some beautiful weather. Expect plentiful sunshine with a high of 71°F and gentle NNE winds at 5 to 10 mph. As the day winds down, the temperatures will drop to a refreshing low of 43°F, with winds remaining light and variable. Perfect weather for a day of walking, camaraderie, and support!

Why We Walk

This year’s walk has already seen an incredible turnout, with over 500 people registered and counting! Together, participants are rallying for a significant fundraising goal of $225,000 in Columbia. This is essential because nearly 7 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, which is a leading cause of death in the United States. In South Carolina, more than 112,500 people are affected, and it’s estimated that there are 219,000 caregivers lending a helping hand to their loved ones battling this disease.

The Promise Garden Ceremony

Before the walk kicks off, participants are invited to partake in a touching Promise Garden Ceremony. This experience symbolizes unity in the fight against Alzheimer’s. During the ceremony, each participant will carry a brightly colored flower, with each hue representing a personal connection to the disease. It’s an emotional and supportive way to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s.

Words from the Heart

Ashton Houghton, the Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association, South Carolina Chapter, emphasizes the importance of this event. “This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are now treatments that can change the course of the disease,” they say. “By gathering together for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, everyone can help provide vital support for families facing dementia today while also funding research toward more treatments and ultimately an end to the disease.”

The Bigger Picture

Every dollar raised through the walk will directly benefit the Alzheimer’s Association’s mission. This includes enhancing care and support for families currently navigating the challenges of dementia, advancing groundbreaking research, and ensuring that all those who could benefit from available treatments have access to them.
