News Summary

Still Hopes Retirement Community in West Columbia is set to expand with nearly 200 new housing units and a clubhouse, increasing its capacity for seniors. The project, named Brookland Commons, aims to cater to the growing senior population in the area and will include affordable options. Construction is expected to start in 2026, marking a significant development for the community.

Exciting Expansion in West Columbia: Still Hopes Retirement Community to Grow!

West Columbia is buzzing with news of an exciting expansion at the Still Hopes Retirement Community. This beloved community is set to add nearly 200 new housing units along with a fantastic clubhouse designed specifically for retirees. It’s a move that promises to grow the community and provide even more options for comfortable living.

The Details of Expansion

The expansion project, aptly named Brookland Commons, is located along Ninth Street, not far from the Cayce border. Currently, Still Hopes is home to almost 500 residents, and this new addition aims to increase the capacity by an impressive 250 people. This is excellent news considering the growing number of seniors in the area!

What can residents look forward to? Well, for starters, the expansion will include a multi-story apartment complex with 183 rental units that cater to individuals aged 55 and older. You can choose from cozy studio apartments all the way up to spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom units. On top of that, several charming townhome cottages will also make their debut.

Location and Community Impact

In a delightful twist, the project takes place on a site that previously housed the district offices for the Lexington 2 school district. That building has now been relocated to a swanky new $52 million Performing Arts Center. The expansion will add nearly 10 acres to the current 43 acres owned by Still Hopes, marking a significant increase in land for recreational and residential purposes.

Population Trends and Housing Needs

It’s not just about building new homes; it’s about recognizing a trend. In South Carolina, especially in Lexington and Richland counties, there’s a growing population of seniors aged 55 and older. From 2023 to 2027, we can expect an increase of about 12,000 seniors! This clearly indicates a rising demand for suitable living options.

Investments and Development Plans

Still Hopes is planning to invest a substantial $40 million in this latest project. The property was acquired from the Lexington 2 school district for $3.7 million last October. Renovations will transform the old school building into a vibrant clubhouse that will include amenities like restaurants and a wellness center, an ideal way for residents to unwind and socialize.

Design with a Neighborly Feel

The design of the multi-story apartment building will have a unique W-shape, placing it centrally on the property while ensuring that the surrounding area retains a cozy, residential atmosphere. The townhomes will line Ninth Street, making sure everyone feels right at home.

Affordable Options for Seniors

Residents will find that the new apartments offer more affordable living options compared to what’s currently available at Still Hopes. This is particularly important for middle-class seniors, including those who have dedicated their lives to essential services like teaching, healthcare, and law enforcement. Entrance fees will range from $90,000 to $250,000, while monthly rents will be set between $1,700 and $2,500.

Looking Ahead

So, when can we expect to see all of this come to life? The goal is to begin construction in 2026, with an estimated build time of around two years. It’s an exciting time for West Columbia, and the growing facilities at Still Hopes will surely bring joy to many new residents!

Stay tuned as West Columbia continues to create options for vibrant senior living!
