As the blooms begin to blossom in the heart of Columbia, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is all set for a spectacular spring season, celebrating its 50th anniversary with excitement and enthusiasm. The milestones don’t stop there, as the beloved Botanical Garden will commemorate its 30th anniversary this year too!
Mark your calendars, everyone! On June 7, 2025, the garden will host a special Earth Day-inspired celebration fitting for this momentous occasion. The festivities promise to be a blast, showcasing live music, a variety of food trucks, interactive horticultural demonstrations, and a Goosechase scavenger hunt packed with exciting giveaways. It’s a perfect chance for families to enjoy the beauty of nature and all the fun activities planned.
The leadership at Riverbanks Zoo has emphasized the importance of connecting families with wildlife and fostering a love for conservation. This spring’s celebrations embody that mission beautifully, ensuring that every visitor leaves with a smile and a deeper appreciation for nature.
In other thrilling news, a little star has joined the zoo’s animal family! On April 2, 2025, guests were treated to the heartwarming sight of a baby Tammar wallaby peeking out of its mother’s pouch in the Kangaroo Walkabout. This adorable joey is the offspring of Simone and Bandit, who made their way to the zoo in 2023. Can you imagine how tiny this little one is? Joeys start their life the size of a jellybean and spend around eight to nine months developing within their mothers’ pouches.
As the days go by, this little joey will gradually venture out of the pouch for short walks while staying close to mom. By the time it reaches nine months, it will be mostly out in the open but will remain under the care of its mother until it’s about eleven months old. This adorable journey is sure to capture the hearts of many visitors!
This spring isn’t just about celebrations; it’s also a wonderful opportunity for young minds to immerse themselves in the world of wildlife conservation. Riverbanks Zoo offers a fantastic ZooCrew program designed specifically for middle school-aged kids. With registration opening on July 15, 2025, participants will engage in hands-on research projects that foster a passion for conservation biology. It’s an immersive experience that will inspire the next generation of wildlife enthusiasts and caretakers.
So, whether you’re a family looking for an adventure, a nature lover eager to explore, or a young conservationist in the making, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is the place to be this spring! The combination of milestones, exciting new attractions, and opportunities for learning promise a season filled with wonder and joy.
