Exciting news is buzzing around the Palmetto State as Pathways to Healing, a dedicated victims’ services organization, is set to receive a generous boost. Recently, the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office announced that a whopping $26 million in state and federal funding is being allocated to organizations that lend a helping hand to crime victims in South Carolina. Now, that’s what we call a positive impact!
Pathways to Healing, which serves as a vital rape crisis center, will be receiving around $770,000 of this funding. This substantial amount will not just cover operational costs but will specifically fund salaries for staff, vital crisis programming, and most importantly, support for victims and their families. Their services include 24/7 hotline access for those affected by sexual assault, as well as hospital accompaniments. It’s a huge relief for those in vulnerable situations, knowing there’s help available round the clock.
Yet, it’s important to note that Pathways to Healing is still grappling with a challenging financial situation. They’re facing a nearly $400,000 deficit partly due to cuts in funding through the Federal Victims of Crime Act. Executive Director Rebecca Lorick shared some insights about these recent struggles: “We have seen a decline recently in the past probably five to 10 years. The prosecution of white-collar crimes has decreased, leading to reduced funding in our coffers.”
Despite these hurdles, the organization remains optimistic. Lorick expressed a heartfelt hope that the current push for fixes to the Victims of Crime Act will stabilize the funding situation. “It’s a long road, but we’re hanging on with what we have,” she said. The organization is dedicated to aiding around 2,000 people each year, helping to ease trauma and foster recovery.
At Pathways to Healing, the focus is not just on immediate assistance but also on long-term healing. “At the completion of services here, we typically witness a decline in trauma responses,” says Lorick. “We see individuals functioning better, sleeping better, eating better, and coping more effectively with their triggers. Education plays a key role in helping them access the tools they need.”
The support doesn’t stop there! The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office has also made other recent funding awards. For instance, the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office received over $45,000 to support a dedicated investigator focusing on criminal domestic violence.
In a wonderful show of community spirit, Pathways to Healing is gearing up for a special event called “12 Days of Hope” on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3. This campaign will spotlight the inspiring stories of survivors in a book format, shedding light on the journeys of those the organization has helped. It’s a chance for everyone to join in and support victims by donating through their social media or website. What a wonderful way to spread awareness and compassion!
As we approach this important day, consider taking part in the “12 Days of Hope” campaign. Your support tallies up to a tremendous impact, big or small, in the lives of those who truly need it. Let’s join hands and make a difference in our community!
