As the leaves start to change and the air begins to cool, many South Carolinians are brimming with excitement—why, it’s almost time for the South Carolina State Fair! With all the familiar sounds and smells wafting through the air, one of the most entertaining events is returning: the Celebrity Boiled Peanut Eating Contest. Set your calendars for October 9th at 5:30 p.m., because this is one competition you won’t want to miss!
The Lexington County Blowfish have teamed up with the state fair to organize this fun event that offers plenty of laughs, cheers, and, of course, tons of boiled peanuts. If you’ve never been to one of these contests, imagine a crowd gathered as competitors go head-to-head to see who can devour the most delicious boiled peanuts within a set time limit. It’s a spectacle of speed, skill, and maybe a little bit of strategy as they dig into this beloved Southern snack.
This year will see a slight shuffling of the deck when it comes to famous faces in the contest. After winning the coveted Golden Peanut trophy for two consecutive years, Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon has decided to retire from competition. Now, he’ll be taking on the role of celebrity judge, a position surely filled with just as much excitement as competing. This means the spotlight will be open for fresh challengers eager to take home the peanut crown!
Speaking of judges, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott will join Sheriff Koon on the judging panel. Their keen eyes will be watching to ensure everything is done fairly and funly. Additionally, excitement will be in the air with local radio announcer Jonathan Rush stepping in as the master of ceremonies. If anyone knows how to hype a crowd, it’s Jonathan!
For those who have followed the contest in past years, you might recognize the name Rick Henry. This competitor has participated in all four previous contests but hasn’t managed to snag a win yet, holding an impressive record of 0-4. But hold on! This year, he’s coming back with a renewed spirit and the hope that maybe, just maybe, luck will be on his side. With a little perseverance and a lot of peanuts, will this be his year?
Whether you’re a fan of the competitors or simply love enjoying a bag of boiled peanuts, this event is lined up to be a great time for everyone. Make sure to grab your friends and family to experience the thrill of the contest live. If you can’t make it there in person, don’t worry! You can catch all the excitement as it happens by tuning in to WIS News 10. Make a night of it—bring the popcorn, cheer for your favorites, and enjoy a delightful evening!
Participating in the South Carolina State Fair is always a cherished tradition, and the boiled peanut competition adds a unique flavor to the mix. Aside from the contests, the fair boasts a variety of attractions, delicious food, and entertainment for all ages. Plan to make some memories at the fair that will last a lifetime!
Mark your calendars, gather your crew, and prepare for an incredible time filled with good fun, good food, and community spirit. We can’t wait to see who takes home the Golden Peanut this year!
