In a remarkable show of support for the growth and innovation of the manufacturing sector, the charming city of Andrews recently witnessed a significant event that recognized outstanding contributions to the industry. The annual South Carolina Manufacturing Summit, held on December 4 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, highlighted the excellence of regional manufacturers and honored their continuous efforts to steer the state’s economy forward.
As the ceremony unfolded, the weather outside was uncharacteristically dreary for December in South Carolina. A 40% chance of rain earlier in the day greeted attendees as patchy fog lingered in the air. The temperature barely reached 62°F, with a gentle breeze from the north-northeast making it feel even cooler. However, nothing could dampen the spirits of the honorees and the crowd that gathered to celebrate them.
This year’s coveted Chuck Spangler Outstanding Manufacturing Lifetime Service Award went to none other than Bob Meltzer, the COO of Peddinghaus, a leading manufacturing firm based in our very own Andrews. In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Meltzer reflected on the challenges and triumphs faced in the industry, attributing his success to the teamwork and dedication of the Peddinghaus family.
As the guests cheered, industry leaders such as Ben Smith, Vice President of Operations at Peddinghaus, and Amary Tisdale, Operations Manager, stood by Meltzer’s side, proudly sharing in the spotlight. They exemplified the spirit of collaboration that propels the manufacturing sector, ensuring that quality and innovation remain at the heart of their business.
The South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance (SCMA) and the South Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership (SCMEP) organized the summit to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of the state’s manufacturing community. According to Sara Hazzard, President and CEO of SCMA, “These awards celebrate the remarkable drive and creativity of South Carolina’s manufacturers. We are excited to honor those who contribute significantly to advancing the industry and enhancing our state’s reputation as a manufacturing leader.”
Andy Carr, President and CEO of SCMEP, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of innovation and operational excellence in keeping South Carolina at the forefront of the manufacturing sector. “The individuals and companies recognized are leading the charge in innovation and excellence. Their contributions not only elevate their operations but reinforce the strength and competitiveness of our entire manufacturing landscape,” Carr remarked.
With over 200 member companies and more than 100,000 associates across the state, the SCMA proudly stands as the sole organization advocating for the interests of manufacturers in South Carolina. Their mission is crystal clear: to strengthen and advance the manufacturing ecosystem through advocacy, workforce development, and community engagement.
The SCMEP, on the other hand, provides vital resources to boost innovation and operating capabilities among manufacturers, ensuring they stay competitive in a rapidly evolving landscape. As an affiliate of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the SCMEP plays an essential role in promoting industrial competitiveness across the state.
As we look to a future filled with promise and opportunities, Andrews and the larger South Carolina manufacturing community remain committed to fostering environments where businesses can thrive and innovation flourishes. This year’s summit served as a wonderful reminder of the hard work that takes place behind the scenes, ensuring the wheels of our economy continue to turn.
Whether the skies are cloudy or clear, the spirit of collaboration and achievement shines bright in the world of manufacturing. Be sure to stay tuned for more updates on how Andrews and neighboring communities are connecting, sharing, and solving challenges together!
