On a beautiful sunny day, Columbia is shining brighter than ever as the South Carolina Department of Social Services (SCDSS) just announced some fantastic news for early childhood education in the state. With high temperatures nearing 80°F and clear skies, it feels like the sunshine is celebrating alongside the SCDSS!

As of October 13, 2024, SCDSS has been awarded a generous Preschool Development Renewal Grant that amounts to an impressive $8 million annually for three years. This significant funding comes at a crucial time, aiming to bolster the early care and education system across South Carolina, benefiting children, families, and the early care workforce.

Exciting Changes for Families and Children

Michael Leach, the State Director of DSS, couldn’t hide his excitement, stating, “We are thrilled to receive this renewal grant, which allows us to continue our critical work for the children and families of South Carolina.” The funds will provide various resources to support and empower families, enhance the workforce, and create opportunities for every child to truly thrive.

Among the key areas the grant will address are:

• Improving the quality and availability of early childhood education services for underserved children.

• Evaluating the compensation, benefits, and mental health needs of the ECE workforce.
• Providing essential mental and behavioral health supports for children.
• Enhancing services for young children with disabilities.

First Baptist Church in Kingstree. Led by organizer Rev. Ian Geimer, dozens of participants ranging from 6 weeks old to over 80 years came together for an opening prayer. It was a beautiful moment of unity, showcasing the strength of community support for local initiatives. Jean Nexsen, the Mission Committee Chairperson, played a key role in organizing the gathering, demonstrating that together, we can create a positive change.

In addition to the early education grant, the Felician Sisters from the Felician Center have shown a strong commitment to uplifting the Black community and promoting equitable opportunities for all races, nationalities, and faiths. Their mission aligns perfectly with the values being nurtured through the preschool grant, creating a brighter future for children of all backgrounds.
