South Carolina: A Hub for Revolutionary Defense Tech!

Columbia, South Carolina has become a hotbed for innovation in defense technology, thanks to a dynamic startup called Integer Technologies. Founded in 2021 by the savvy duo of Duke Hartman and Josh Knight, this company has quickly taken the nation by storm. In just three years, Integer has soared to the top, ranking No. 1 on the list of the 50 Fastest Growing Companies in South Carolina. Talk about a success story!

Bridging Gaps in Defense Tech

Integer Technologies shines as a beacon of progress in the U.S. Department of Defense. The company specializes in spotting technology gaps and promptly collaborates with university partners to bring groundbreaking solutions from research labs straight into the hands of servicemen and women. The company is tackling complex challenges with a focus on autonomous systems specifically designed for naval applications.

One of their latest feats includes the development of a prototype that assists unmanned service vessels (USVs) with navigation and avoiding collisions. This is groundbreaking and feels like something straight out of a sci-fi movie!

Meet the Founders

Duke Hartman, the visionary CEO of Integer, is no stranger to the defense industry. With a background as a professional engineer, Hartman’s experience lies at the intersection of maritime and defense operations. Partnering with him is Josh Knight, the company’s Chief Operating Officer and lead scientist. Knight brings a wealth of experience from managing R&D teams in the defense sector, making these two a powerhouse duo.

Their journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many might have hesitated to start something new. But instead of sitting back, they rolled up their sleeves and got to work; and boy, has it paid off!

Collaborating with Universities

Integer’s growth can be attributed to solid partnerships with various universities. These collaborations provide additional funding for research and help enhance the facilities and resources available to students and faculty alike. The University of South Carolina stands out as Integer’s top academic partner, but the company is also making strides with contracts from Louisiana State University and Benedict College.

During his reflections on the local tech talent, Knight shared, “There is, in South Carolina, and particularly where we are in Columbia, a base of tech, or a base of STEM talent that I think folks outside don’t fully appreciate.” These partnerships not only boost the company but contribute significantly to job creation and retention in the local economy.

Tech for the Military

At the heart of Integer’s mission is getting their cutting-edge technology into the hands of sailors, marines, and airmen. While their tech has already seen action on Navy ships during missions, it hasn’t been integrated for full-time use yet. Hartman pointed out the significant challenge of building trust in autonomous systems—a critical concern for the military.

The company has taken a unique approach by believing in the philosophy of “don’t just tell them, but show them.” Through tests of early prototypes on real vessels, Integer is gathering invaluable feedback to refine their systems while proving how their technology is continually evolving. Hartman proclaimed, “What’s hard about what we do is also what excites us the most and is the most inspiring in terms of a goal: putting research into action.”

The Future Looks Bright!

As Integer Technologies continues to thrive, it’s clear that South Carolina is cementing itself as an emerging leader in defense technology. With spirited minds like Hartman and Knight at the helm, we can’t help but be excited about what’s next. The future, folks, is bright—and it’s happening right here in our own backyard!
