South Carolina Ballet Captivates Columbia with Chilling Performance of Dracula

South Carolina Ballet Performs Chilling Classic in Columbia

Columbia, SC—What gets you into the Halloween spirit? Is it the costumes, the candy, or perhaps the chilling tales of creatures that go bump in the night? This year, Columbia was treated to something truly special: the South Carolina Ballet’s stunning production of “Dracula: Ballet with a Bite.” Premiering on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Koger Center for the Arts, this captivating ballet had audiences on the edge of their seats.

A Night of Dance and Drama

Under the direction of William Starrett, the South Carolina Ballet has been delighting fans since 1991, and with each performance, he brings something fresh to the stage. Starrett expertly adapts Bram Stoker’s iconic novel, inviting viewers into the eerie world of vampires, love, and survival. With stunning lighting, intricate choreography, and an evolving score, he transforms this classic gothic tale into a mesmerizing experience.

Starrett’s dedication to keeping the production “fresh and current” means that every season promises a surprise. “The sets, the music, the lighting, the costumes, and the choreography are always changing,” he noted in a press release. With the performance being a staple of the Columbia arts scene, it’s no wonder that audiences keep coming back for more.

The Storyline Unfolds

The ballet follows the spine-tingling journey of the Harker family as they navigate a quaint Transylvanian town, meet the enigmatic Count Dracula, and try to escape with their lives. The production, while absolutely thrilling, does come with a PG-13 rating, so it’s more suitable for older children and adults who can appreciate a good scare.

Sitting in the audience, we witnessed a blend of artistry and eerie storytelling that had everyone spellbound. The dancers poured their hearts into each movement, creating a palpable tension that gripped us from the beginning to the bloody finale!

A Rich History and a Bright Future

Since its inception in 1961 as the Columbia City Ballet, the company has continually evolved, and in 2023 it rebranded simply as the South Carolina Ballet. This change reflects a desire to connect with audiences across the state, ensuring that every city feels represented. “The different cities that we perform in, it gives them pride,” Starrett told us excitedly. “Columbia is our base, but when we go to Hartsville, they can brag that their state ballet was in their city.”

This statewide mission is evident, as the South Carolina Ballet has exciting performances planned for the upcoming months. Mark your calendars for their enchanting rendition of “The Nutcracker” slated for December 14th, 15th, 21st, and 22nd, followed by the timeless love story of “Romeo and Juliet” on February 8th, and the romantic tragedy of “Giselle” on March 22nd.

The Perfect Halloween Tradition

As Columbia showcased “Dracula: Ballet with a Bite,” it became clear that this event is not just a performance but a cherished Halloween tradition that brings the community together. The buzz of excitement in the air, the delightful anticipation, and the collective gasps throughout the theater made for an unforgettable evening.

If you’re confident enough to brave the haunted tales of Count Dracula, don’t miss your chance to see the South Carolina Ballet’s captivating performance next Halloween season—or better yet, enjoy one of their upcoming shows this winter! This is a company that knows how to dance its way into the hearts and spirits of South Carolinians, one mesmerizing performance at a time.
