IRMO, S.C. — In a series of events that took place last Friday, the usually peaceful atmosphere at H.E. Corley Elementary School was shaken by a disturbance involving several individuals. This incident has led to the arrest of a 22-year-old man known as Javon Quattlebaum, who now faces multiple charges.
The drama unfolded around 9:15 AM when the School Resource Officer (SRO) assigned to the elementary school noticed a suspicious vehicle parked nearby. As he approached the vehicle, he was met with an unmistakable odor of marijuana, prompting him to take immediate action.
Realizing that something unusual was afoot, the SRO quickly called for backup units to assist. What began as a routine check escalated into a more significant situation as two occupants were soon taken into custody. However, not everyone was cooperating, as two other individuals attempted to flee the scene.
With concerns growing, the school was promptly put on lockdown. This protective measure ensured the safety of the children and staff while law enforcement arrived to assess the situation. The Irmo Police Department, along with additional officers from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, quickly responded to the unfolding scene.
While two individuals were detained—one being Quattlebaum himself and the other a minor who was later released to his parents—there were still two more who managed to run away. Deputies pursued these suspects on foot, with multiple units from both the sheriff’s department and the Irmo PD assisting in the chase.
Despite the intense search efforts, these two men were not located. But, the community can breathe a sigh of relief, as the Richland County Sheriff’s Department has indicated that they do not believe these suspects pose any ongoing danger to Irmo residents.
If anyone in the area witnessed the events of that unsettling morning or has additional information, they’re encouraged to reach out. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department has set up a hotline for tips—just call 9-1-1 or the RCSD at 1(800) 576-3000.
As the dust settles from this unusual incident, Quattlebaum has been charged with possession of marijuana, possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, giving false information to law enforcement, disturbing a school, and trespassing after notification to leave. It’s quite the list of charges that has left many in the community shocked.
The community’s reaction to the incident has been one of concern but also of gratitude towards law enforcement for their swift action. Parents and teachers alike are relieved that the situation was handled without anyone getting hurt.
As Irmo continues to process this event, residents are reminded of the importance of vigilance in keeping their schools and neighborhoods safe. It’s always better to be cautious, especially when it comes to the safety of our children.
Remember, the Irmo community is resilient, and together, they will continue to maintain a safe environment for everyone. Stay tuned for updates or any further news regarding this incident!
