ST. GEORGE, S.C. — A former South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) clerk was arrested on Wednesday, Aug. 28, and charged with embezzlement, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
Shayla Singleton-Drayton, 44, is being charged with the embezzlement of public funds. Singleton-Drayton supposedly committed this fraudulent act while she was working as a customer service representative at the St. George DMV office.
An affidavit poses that Singleton-Drayton embezzled public funds totaling $19,451. This series of unlawful activities is reported to have taken place from December 1, 2022, to March 7, 2024.
During her questioning, Singleton-Drayton confessed to SLED agents that she had, in fact, taken the money. She stated that she used the stolen funds to pay her personal bills and expenses. After her confession, she was promptly booked at the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office.
An arrest of a public service provider for embezzlement signifies the seriousness of such offenses and the state’s intent to curb corruption. This case signifies another example of the state law enforcement’s relentless fight against such dishonest actions.
