Residents of the Laurel Meadows neighborhood in Sarasota County are demanding answers following devastating flooding caused by Tropical Storm Debby. The floodwaters have left dozens of homes ruined, and many wonder why their neighborhood suffered severe flooding while neighboring areas remain unaffected.
For Judi and Dave Park, the disaster of the flooding became a reality when they returned to their home three days after Tropical Storm Debby. “You kind of mentally say goodbye to everything and it’s kind of a treasure when you get a picture or something but walking through your house to see floorboards floating, it’s not easy,” Judi Park shared.
Like many families in the area, by the time they knew to evacuate, it was already too late. Residents have observed that while their homes were drenched, neighboring communities like Artistry remained high and dry, leading them to question why the Laurel Meadows area flooded so badly.
After residents voiced their concerns, we sought answers from Gov. Ron DeSantis. In response, the Governor acknowledged the need for changes in light of the recent boom in development around these areas. He assured that the issues had not been ignored, but were simply in areas where this had not usually happened.
Matt Jonas, another resident of Laurel Meadows, expressed frustration and implored local authorities to identify the problem and work on a solution. “The county needs to step up, own it, resolve it, and get this water out of here,” said Jonas.
Jeff Berardelli, Chief Meteorologist for Max Defender 8, stated that the rainfall from Tropical Storm Debby was a one-in-200-year event for Sarasota County. While this explanation offers comfort to some residents, many are left wondering when they will finally be able to return to their homes.
