Located in the heart of Columbia, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has been a beloved community fixture for decades. On June 14, its popularity was on full display as it celebrated a momentous occasion — welcoming its 40 millionth guest.
Since opening in 1974, Riverbanks Zoo has brought joy to millions of guests over its 50-year history. The lucky 40 millionth visitor was Peyton McMillan, whose family received an unexpected surprise when they were greeted by Riverbanks President and CEO, Tommy Stringfellow.
With an air of excitement, Stringfellow presented the McMillans with a Family Explorer Membership and a Backstage Tour. The family was astonished by the unexpected recognition. “We were completely shocked when the staff told us we were the 40 millionth guests,” McMillan said. “We absolutely love Riverbanks, and this makes our visits even more special!”
Reaching 40 million guests is not just a reflection of the Zoo’s popularity; it is also a testament to the institution’s commitment to its guests and the larger community. The milestone coincides with Riverbanks’ golden jubilee year, a moment that Stringfellow finds deeply gratifying.
“I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our 50th anniversary than by reaching this incredible milestone,” Stringfellow remarked. “It’s a remarkable year for us, filled with celebration and gratitude for the support we’ve received from the community and our guests over the decades.”
Despite its 50-year history, Riverbanks is far from resting on its laurels. In the future, visitors can look forward to continued growth and expansion, including the upcoming ‘Bridge to the Wild’ project. This new addition promises to enhance visitor’s experience and deepen the commitment to conservation and education.
“We are excited about our upcoming expansion,” said Stringfellow. “’Bridge to the Wild’ will enable us to further provide unforgettable experiences and will continue our mission of conservation and education at Riverbanks and beyond.”
As the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden continues to evolve and expand, it looks forward to creating unforgettable experiences for millions more guests in the years to come.
