On a sunny day in Columbia, SC, the community came together to celebrate a special milestone! Rapid Shelter Columbia recently marked the 2nd birthday of its Calhoun Street location, and the event was nothing short of inspiring. The facility has played a vital role in helping many residents who have faced homelessness, guiding them toward a path of stability and independence.
Among the highlights of the celebration was the heartfelt story shared by former resident Matt Kummer. Matt, who now enjoys the comfort of his own permanent home, couldn’t contain his gratitude for the shelter. “I can’t express to you what a great feeling it was to have a key and a Pallet house,” he reflected. “I hadn’t had my own home in so long, and there was a power in that. It was something I could call mine. It was really a very touching and moving experience for me.” His words truly resonated with everyone present, emphasizing the profound impact that having a safe space can bring to someone’s life.
The birthday celebration wasn’t just a time for reminiscing; it was also an occasion to recognize the hard work of community partners who have made a difference. Awards were handed out to those who have shown dedication and commitment to helping the unhoused population. Councilwoman Dr. Aditi Bussells was particularly proud of the achievements over the past two years. “It was wonderful to see people come together and reflect on how much progress we’ve made,” she said. “As of today, one of our employees was actually late to the celebration because he was helping a resident sign a lease. We have permanently housed 71 individuals, and I’m very proud of that number.”
The impact of Rapid Shelter Columbia is immeasurable, with staff working tirelessly to provide support and resources to residents. Case Manager Jalen Loney emphasized that real change often comes from within. “It’s more of a mental connection because we see the drug abuse, we see the mental traumas going on firsthand. I see it every day,” he explained. “Sometimes we can’t change everyone unless they’re ready, so when they’re ready, we have open arms and help them on their way.” That statement perfectly illustrates the compassionate approach taken by the staff, emphasizing the importance of individual readiness for change.
