Columbia, S.C. is buzzing with excitement! On Friday evening, eager visitors flocked to the vibrant Five Points district for the second-ever Philosophy at Five Points. This unique gathering invited everyone to engage in deep thought while unleashing their creativity, resulting in an extraordinary mix of art and philosophical questions. Dubbed a “Curiosity Crawl through Five Points,” the event turned ordinary shopping into an enriching experience.
Shops in Five Points kept their doors open late, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. The highlight of the evening? Ten captivating art installations scattered throughout the area, each driven by a different thought-provoking prompt! Visitors had the rare chance to interact with philosophers and local artists, creating unique pieces of art while pondering some of life’s biggest mysteries.
One of the standout installations took place at All Good Books, where the talented University of South Carolina Art History Professor Yarianna Colon Lopez guided students in expressing their responses through drawings. “Our theme focuses on how different languages guide interpretations of various objects and concepts. Attendees can sketch or write their thoughts, contributing to a growing mural of perspectives on our community wall,” Lopez shared with enthusiasm.
Over at the Boyd Innovation Center, philosopher Kim Beasley sparked creativity by inviting guests to answer a thought-provoking prompt on tags that were attached to living artists. “I hope this helps people appreciate the sense of community and the beauty of collaboration,” Beasley noted. It was evident that her vision was coming to life as smiles spread across the faces of participants.
The vibe at the event was nothing short of delightful, as visitors shared their thoughts and experiences after exploring different installations. Kati Vaan Aernum, who was intrigued by the concept of merging art and philosophy, exclaimed, “I thought it sounded fun! I love artistic things, and I was curious about how philosophy would come into play. It’s super fun! I loved every question at every stop!”
Another attendee, Beth Dehart, appreciated the collaborative spirit. “It’s cool to see people trying new things and making fun creations together. It’s just a lovely moment where everyone is having a great time!” she explained.
Even those who were visiting Five Points for the very first time, like Laura Hawksley, found immense joy in the experience. “This was my first time down here, and it’s such a beautiful area!” she remarked, clearly enchanted by the lively atmosphere and the community spirit radiating throughout the district.
As the event unfolded, organizers shared their excitement about the future. Plans are already in motion to expand Philosophy at Five Points next year, allowing even more community members to join in on the fun and exploration of art and philosophy! The streets of Columbia’s Five Points are officially the place to be for those seeking a unique experience!
So, if you missed out this time, don’t fret! Keep your eyes peeled for next year’s extravaganza. We can’t wait to see what other witty prompts and beautiful art will emerge from this creative gathering!
