Thousands flocked to Gilbert, South Carolina, on July 4, 2024, to celebrate both America’s Independence Day and the beloved peach during the annual Lexington County Peach Festival. By expanding the usual Fourth of July festivities with an event dedicated to the ‘queen of fruits,’ this little corner of Lexington County has become a significant hub attracting more than 50,000 visitors.
Apart from the mouthwatering peach treats that blended seamlessly into the festival, such as peach slushies and peach tea offered by various vendors, the festival also featured an extensive range of other activities. Those interested in antique and novel vehicles enjoyed the car show, while kids splashed color on their faces at the face painting stalls. The heart of the festival remained the procession that exhibited the community spirit and local culture.
The festival has its roots in the community dating back decades. Colden Harman, a local vendor who has attended the festival since his childhood, remarked, “It’s something that you can hang your hat on and say I gave back to my community this year and I was able to cater to these numerous people who want to see Gilbert, South Carolina and enjoy what we have to offer; it’s really been a blessing all these years.”
As the festival coincides with Independence Day, the jubilant atmosphere was magnified as people celebrated the freedom of their nation. Visitor Ken Johnson expressed his views on the significance of the event: “It means everything; we are celebrating our birthday. Thank God for our constitution.”
Behind the scenes of the hugely successful event, the Gilbert Community Club works tirelessly. This non-profit organization independently funds the entire festival, utilizing all proceeds to maintain the Gilbert Community Park and offer scholarships to local students excelling in academics and athletics.
While the festival was a day filled with fun and celebration, its primary goal revolves around the promotion and betterment of the local community — a goal it continues to meet year after year.
As the sun set on another successful Lexington County Peach Festival, the visitors left with remarkable memories, the taste of delicious peaches, and a reinforced sense of community and freedom. Let’s look forward to another year of revelling in the spectacular celebration of peach and freedom in Gilbert, South Carolina.
