Changes to Columbia Parking Rates and Enforcement Set for March 2025

Changes Coming to Parking in Columbia

Columbia, SC is getting ready for some big changes when it comes to parking! This week, the City Council approved a new parking rate ordinance that’s set to shake things up starting March 1, 2025. So, what does this mean for residents and visitors? Let’s dive into the details!

Parking Rates on the Rise

First things first, if you’re someone who regularly parks on the street, you’ll need to dig a little deeper into your pockets. The new on-street parking rate is going up to $1.50 per hour. That’s a jump from the previous rate, which means you’ll want to keep an eye on that meter! If you happen to forget to feed the meter or park in the wrong spot, be prepared for an increased ticket cost as well. Parking tickets will rise from $8.00 to $25.00, so make sure to follow those parking signs!

First Hour Free

Here’s a little silver lining for parking in the city: if you park in any City of Columbia parking deck, your first hour will be free! That’s right, you can take a quick trip without worrying about a parking fee. It’s a great option for those just popping in for a quick errand, or grabbing a bite to eat.

Special Parking Permits

So, what about those folks who work in hospitality? The good news is that hospitality workers will have access to rooftop-only parking for $35 per month. This special rate is aimed at easing the day-to-day challenges of finding parking in the bustling city. Homeowners also get a deal! If you own a home in Columbia, you can apply for an owner-occupant residential permit for $30 per vehicle for a 24-month period. Need to host some visitors? Visitor permits are also available for $24 per vehicle for the same time frame.

New Enforcement Hours

Another significant change is when parking enforcement will take place. Now, enforcement will happen city-wide from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The twist? There won’t be any enforcement on Saturdays, aside from the Five Points District. This means you can relax a little on the weekends and enjoy the charm of the city without worrying about that ticking clock on your parking meter.

Infrastructure Improvements

So, why are these changes necessary? According to Councilman Will Brennan, the additional funds from parking fees will go directly into critical infrastructure, maintenance, and repairs for the aging parking decks in the city. It’s a step towards maintaining the quality and safety of parking facilities for everyone who drives into Columbia. After all, a city’s amenities should be well-kept and easily accessible!

Summary of the New Ordinances:

  • No enforcement for on-street parking on Saturdays (Except for the Five Points District)
  • City-wide on-street parking enforcement from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Monday-Friday)
  • 1st hour free in all City of Columbia Parking decks
  • Hospitality rooftop-only parking for $35/month
  • On-street parking rate of $1.50/hour
  • Various increases in fines for parking citations
  • Owner-occupant residential permits for $30 per vehicle (24-month period)
  • Owner-occupant visitor permits for $24 per vehicle (24-month period)

As these changes roll out in March 2025, Columbia residents and visitors will need to stay alert and adapt to the new parking scene. Whether you are a regular downtown driver, a hospitality employee, or just someone visiting for the day, understanding these new rules will make your parking experience smoother. Buckle up, Columbia—things are about to get a little different!
