Exciting News for Nature Lovers: The Old Mill Pond Trail is Now Open in Lexington!

Hey there, Lexington! You’ll be thrilled to hear that the long-awaited Old Mill Pond Trail has finally opened, and it’s just as amazing as we’d hoped. On a bright and slightly overcast Friday morning, the town hosted a wonderful grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate this fantastic addition to our community. Residents and nature enthusiasts alike gathered to admire the trail and pay tribute to the hard work that made it possible.

A Vision Comes to Life

The Old Mill Pond Trail has its roots in the town’s 2012 Vision Plan, which envisioned creating a lovely space for families and individuals to enjoy nature. However, the road to this moment wasn’t easy. In 2015, a historic flooding event hit the Carolinas hard, causing major breaches in local dams, including the one at Old Mill. This unfortunate event left the pond empty for almost nine years and dampened the initial plans.

But thanks to a remarkable partnership between public and private contributors, including the Old Mill Brew Pub and Hazelwood Brewery, the dream has now turned into a reality. The dedication and collaboration have brought about this new outdoor space where everyone can come to relax and enjoy the great outdoors.

What to Expect at the Trail

The Old Mill Pond Trail is a scenic 1.15-mile paved loop that wraps around the picturesque Lexington Mill Pond. It’s designed not just for walking but also for enjoying breathtaking views of nature. The trail includes charming bridges, cozy outlooks, and inviting seating areas where visitors can take a breather and soak in the beautiful surroundings.

Now, before you head out to explore, here are a few important things to know:

  • Bicycles are allowed on the trail, except for E-bikes, so make sure to pedal down and enjoy!
  • There’s ADA accessible parking close to the Old Mill Brew Pub for those who need it.
  • Unfortunately, activities such as fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and swimming are not allowed, so plan accordingly.
  • No motorized vehicles are permitted on the trail, except for wheelchairs.
  • Leashed dogs are more than welcome, so feel free to bring your furry friends along!
  • Parking options are available at various locations like 711 E. Main Street, 717 Main Street, and 510 S. Lake Drive.

Get Ready for a Beautiful Experience

With today’s weather forecast predicting a high of 82°F and a chance of a stray shower or thunderstorm, it might be a good idea to bring an umbrella, just in case! The soothing sounds of nature, combined with the fresh air and mild winds coming from the northeast at around 10 to 15 mph, promise an enriching experience. Whether you’re walking, biking, or simply enjoying the sights there’s no doubt you’ll leave the trail feeling refreshed.

A Step Forward for the Community

The opening of the Old Mill Pond Trail is a wonderful way to enhance our community and provide a space where families and friends can create lasting memories. So, let’s lace up those sneakers, grab our bikes, and hit the trail to celebrate this beautiful new space right here in Lexington!

Happy exploring, everyone!
