Nikki Haley ‘Frees’ Her Delegates to Support Donald Trump at Upcoming RNC

Haley Bids for Party Unity Ahead of Republican National Convention

In a probable effort to strengthen GOP support around the party’s presumptive nominee, former South Carolina governor and United Nations Ambassador, Nikki Haley, has released her delegates to back Donald Trump at the upcoming Republican National Convention (RNC).

Haley had accumulated a respectable 97 delegates from a dozen primaries and caucuses throughout early 2024. However, her recent decision to release these delegates puts them in the position to fully rally behind Trump, further solidifying the support he’d receive at next week’s convention.

Strengthening the Republican Front Against the Democratic Line-Up

Haley, who continues to remain an influential voice within the party, used her statement not only to promote unity within GOP ranks but also disparage the current Democratic administration. She called Democratic President Joe Biden “not competent to serve a second term” and painted a grim picture of a potential presidency for Vice President Kamala Harris. The United Nations’ former ambassador issued an urgent call for a leader capable of holding enemies accountable, bolstering border security, reducing national debt, and reinvigorating the economy.

“We need a president who will hold our enemies to account, secure our border, cut our debt, and get our economy back on track,” Haley declared. “I encourage my delegates to support Donald Trump next week in Milwaukee.”

No RNC Attendance for Haley

Despite her public endorsement, Haley will not attend next week’s RNC in Milwaukee. According to spokesperson Chaney Denton, “She was not invited, and she’s fine with that. Trump deserves the convention he wants. She’s made it clear she’s voting for him and wishes him the best.”

Previous Rivalries Put Aside as Crucial Election Looms

Haley was Trump’s last significant GOP competitor remaining when she closed her campaign following Trump’s Super Tuesday victory. This decision comes despite prior public disagreements between Haley and Trump, where Haley criticised him for causing chaos and discounting the importance of U.S. alliances abroad. Trump, for his part, often mocked Haley with the nickname “Birdbrain.”

However, they both have found common ground in ensuring a Republican win, with Haley even confirming that she’d be presenting her vote for Trump.

How Will Haley’s Delegates Be Handled?

The handling of Haley’s delegates will be subject to each state’s specific rules. The Republican National Committee traditionally defers to individual state regulations when managing delegates pledged to candidates who withdraw from the competition. Therefore, each state will need to refer to its protocol in diverting Haley’s delegates to support Trump.

The upcoming Republican Convention will determine whether Haley’s strategic move translates into heightened support for Trump.
