Columbia, a vibrant city known for its dynamic mix of culture and community, is getting ready to say goodbye to one of its dining spots while eagerly awaiting an exciting new restaurant to take its place. Just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the University of South Carolina’s basketball arena, the much-loved Angell Bros. 1801 Grille has closed its doors, but don’t fret! School officials are buzzing with news that a brand-new restaurant concept is just around the corner.
This past Tuesday, locals and students noticed a sign posted on the door of the restaurant located in the 700 Lincoln development. The notice declared the closure, expressing heartfelt thanks to customers for their support over the years. It also ignited excitement with a promise of “a new and exciting restaurant concept” coming soon, directing patrons to keep an eye on the University of South Carolina’s dining website for further updates.
USC spokesman Jeff Stensland has mentioned that the space might welcome its new eatery as soon as November. Though specific details about the future establishment are still under wraps, Stensland hinted that inspiration could be drawn from The Golden Spur, a trendy new spot that opened up in August at USC’s Campus Village.
For those who may be wondering about the journey of the 1801 Grille, it opened its doors back in early 2017, initially managed by the Burke Hospitality Group in collaboration with the university. However, that chapter ended in late 2022. This past February, the Angell Bros. hospitality group breathed new life into the space, offering a diverse menu that ranged from stone-fired pizzas to steaks, seafood dishes, and beyond. Although it had its moments, the Angell Bros. 1801 Grille has now officially shut its doors, making way for something fresh and exciting.
The restaurant is nestled right in the heart of the bustling downtown Vista district, surrounded by a host of student residences, retail shops, and eateries. Its prime location directly across from the front entrance of the Colonial Life Arena made it a popular dining choice for students and sports enthusiasts alike. Nearby competitors such as Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Crazy Wings, Starbucks, and Thirsty Fellow create a lively food scene, giving the new establishment a fantastic chance to carve out its niche.
As we wait in eager anticipation for the next big thing to fill this space, it’s clear that Columbia is always evolving. A fresh restaurant can bring new flavors and experiences, and who knows? The next eatery might become the new go-to for locals looking to grab a quick bite or students fueling up before a big game.
For now, the future looks bright for our culinary landscape, and residents are encouraged to keep their eyes peeled for updates. Whether you’re a college student, a downtown worker, or a Columbia local, the area’s dining scene is sure to have something delightful in store for you soon!
