Shocking Incident in Lexington: Mother Assaulted by Son

Lexington, S.C. – A quiet Sunday morning in the suburban neighborhood of Palm Court took a horrifying turn when a Lexington County man, 57-year-old Keith Miles, was arrested after allegedly assaulting his 80-year-old mother. The unfortunate incident unfolded in their home, leading to a standoff with police that would rattle the peaceful community.

Details of the Incident

According to a report from the Lexington Police Department (LPD), the troubling situation began around 11 a.m. The mother and son were engaged in what started as a normal conversation in the kitchen. However, things escalated quickly when she noticed a “crazed look in his eyes”, leading her to suspect he may have relapsed into drug use.

Witnesses are still reeling from the events that followed. Miles allegedly began to make bizarre statements and attacked his mother, punching her multiple times. The report described a terrifying scene where Miles wrestled his mother down, wrapping a small kitchen rug around her head and face in an attempt to suffocate her. He is accused of straddling her and twisting her neck from side to side, leaving her fearing for her life.

But the nightmare didn’t end there. According to the police report, Miles then grabbed two hammers from the kitchen and threatened to break his mother’s legs. In a truly chilling moment, the victim recounted how she believed he would snap her neck and kill her.

A Desperate Escape

After what felt like an eternity of terror lasting approximately four hours, the elderly woman managed to escape her son’s hold. She was able to get off the floor and, with great courage, made her way to her bedroom. In a moment of desperation, she fled through the back door, taking her purse and keys with her.

With a sense of urgency, she drove to her other son’s house, where she finally called law enforcement. This brave act likely saved her life.

Community Reactions

Residents in the neighborhood expressed their shock and disbelief upon learning about the incident. Many described Palm Court as a “rather quiet neighborhood,” where such violent occurrences are uncommon. Will Sharpe, a neighbor just a few doors down, mentioned how he’d never seen police in the area until now, which left him feeling confused and worried.

“I know after the whole situation there was still several cops out here, I don’t know how long they were exactly out here, but there were undercover cops… it was a lot,” Sharpe stated.

Despite the gravity of the situation, some neighbors have suggested they have heard arguments coming from the Miles home in the past, indicating this might not have been the first incident of its kind.

Legal Proceedings

Diving into the aftermath of this harrowing event, bond was denied for Keith Miles. During his bond hearing, he appeared remorseful and claimed to be disabled. Now, he’s facing serious charges, including assault and battery, as well as kidnapping.

His next court appearance is set for November 21, where he will face the full force of the law for his actions against his mother.

A Community in Shock

As the community processes this shocking event, it’s evident that everyone is hoping for healing and peace. Lexington is known for its close-knit atmosphere, making this incident even more distressing for all involved.

While the residents reflect on this bizarre and dangerous occurrence, they are reminded of the importance of safety and looking out for one another in times of need. As the investigation continues, many are left with lingering questions about what could have led to such a tragic situation.
