Columbia Commemorates Heroes at Mission BBQ’s 9/11 Event

If you happen to be in Columbia today, there’s a warm sense of community filling the air as locals come together at Mission BBQ to remember and honor those who gave their all on September 11, 2001. This year marked the thirteenth anniversary of the restaurant’s heartfelt tradition of commemorating this somber day, and the atmosphere was one of both reflection and gratitude.

A Day to Remember

Mission BBQ opened its doors on September 11, 2011, with a heartfelt purpose: to serve up authentic barbecue while paying tribute to America’s heroes. Ever since, each September 11th, all Mission BBQ locations host special events that bring together first responders, veterans, and the community, ensuring we never forget the sacrifices made on that fateful day.

This year, the Columbia location saw some truly touching moments. Kaaren Miller from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department graced the audience with a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, setting the tone for the day. The ceremony also featured a moving performance of Taps, played poignantly by Linda McDonald, who reminded everyone of the solemnity of the occasion.

Gratitude for First Responders

Mission BBQ reached out and invited representatives from the Irmo Fire Department, Irmo Police, Columbia Police, Richland County Sheriff’s Department, and Lexington County EMS to join the celebration. As a small token of appreciation, first responders who visited the restaurant on 9/11 were welcomed with a free sandwich, a gesture that truly speaks volumes about Mission BBQ’s commitment to honoring those who protect and serve our communities.

Thayer Sheets, the Area Director of Mission BBQ, expressed heartfelt gratitude during the event. “It is because of these heroes that we gather today, all of you, so that we may never forget and always remember,” he said. His sentiment resonated with everyone present and underscored the importance of community support for those who put their lives on the line daily.

A Special Honoree

This year, JB Barker, a local retired SCDNR officer with an impressive 29-year tenure, was recognized for his dedicated service. Standing proudly alongside Gina Goetschius, the Mission BBQ Community Ambassador, JB’s presence reminded everyone of the many unsung heroes in our communities.

Giving Back

It’s not just about the meals and ceremonies at Mission BBQ. The Columbia location is dedicated to giving back in meaningful ways. They regularly support various local organizations, including the SC State Firefighters Association, SC Law Enforcement Association, and the Muller Memorial Collection. During the event, attendees browsed through a table of hats for sale, with all proceeds going to the Muller Memorial Foundation, highlighting the restaurant’s commitment to meaningful contributions.

If you’re ever in the area, you might want to stop by Mission BBQ at 275 Harbison Boulevard. Not only can you enjoy some mouth-watering barbecue, but you’ll also be supporting a restaurant that truly cares about its community and its heroes. You can find out more about their initiatives and events by visiting their website.

Community Spirit

The annual remembrance at Mission BBQ serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of community and the importance of honoring those who have paved the way for our safety and freedom. So, while the skies above might be gray, the spirit of camaraderie and gratitude is as bright as ever.

As we reflect on the significance of today and the service we witnessed, it’s clear that in Columbia, togetherness and gratitude are as American as apple pie — especially when it’s served with a side of BBQ.
