In a town filled with love and support, the search is on for Zelig Williams, a 28-year-old former Broadway star and beloved Columbia native. Williams, who is known for his electrifying debut in ‘Hamilton’ in 2016 and for his work with Hugh Jackman’s tour in 2019, has gone missing, and his family is reaching out to the community for help.
“We love him, we want him home. Please, if he is seen or spotted, contact the police department so we can bring Zelig home,” said Christine Barber, his concerned aunt, who is deeply affected by his disappearance. The last time the family heard from Williams was on Thursday, October 3rd, around 9:50 a.m. when he spoke with his mother. Christine describes their relationship as being “two peas in a pod,” noting that Williams lives with his mother and that it was unusual for him not to contact her afterward.
The last conversation seemed normal, and when he left, he didn’t mention where he was headed, which left his family worried. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department has joined the search, adding gravity to the situation. Jay Weaver, a Public Information Officer for the department, mentioned that Williams’ car was discovered on Friday, October 4th, at the intersection of Bluff Road and McCords Ferry, close to the Palmetto Trail parking area. However, despite finding the vehicle, there’s been no sign of Williams.
“The family emphasized it’s out of character for him not to reach out,” said Weaver. “He also requires a specific type of medication, making it all the more important to get the word out.” This crucial information has heightened the urgency of the search.
Many in Columbia know Williams not just for his stunning talents on stage but for his dedication to giving back to the community. Plans were in motion for him to organize Broadway boot camps aimed at empowering local youth to chase their dreams in the arts.
“He was just an amazing young man. He was involved in *Southern Strut* from 6th grade and is a proud Dreher High School graduate,” reflected Mieoki Corbett Jacobs, his cousin. “He wanted to share his Broadway experiences with students back home. It’s heartbreaking not knowing where he is.”
The most pressing concern for his family is Zelig’s well-being. Christine Barber added a heartfelt message directly aimed at him: “We want to see you come home, Z. If you are seeing this or listening to this, please come home. We love you very much, and we want you home safely.”
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is encouraging anyone with information about Zelig Williams’ whereabouts to reach out. You can contact them at (803) 576-3000 or via SC Crime Stoppers at 888-CRIME-SC (888-274-6372). Every little bit of information could make a huge difference in bringing this talented young man back to his loving family and the community that holds him dear.
As the search continues, the strength of a community shines through, united not only in concern but in hope. Let’s keep Zelig in our thoughts, wishing for his safe and swift return.
