Midlands of South Carolina Enjoying Calm Weather After Tropical Storm Helene

Columbia, S.C. — After a turbulent couple of days, it looks like the Midlands of South Carolina can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Thanks to Tropical Storm Helene, which recently made quite the scene, we’re in for several days of relatively calm weather.

The remnants of Helene are currently parked over western Kentucky and Tennessee and are moving at a snail’s pace, with an expected arrival in central Kentucky by Sunday morning. So, if you’re thinking about heading outdoors this weekend, it seems like the worst is behind us, but there’s still some weather to chat about.

What to Expect Over the Next Few Days

As we roll into Sunday, watch for an increase in cloud cover. There’s a chance of a few light showers, particularly in the Northern Midlands and Pee Dee areas. But don’t let that dampen your weekend plans! By Monday, it looks like the storm system will pass to the north, and we’ll get ready for a little cold front to slide through midweek.

But don’t throw your raincoats in the trash just yet! The chances of rain with this front are quite low. In fact, it appears that high pressure will take over as we head into later next week, which is expected to bring us some lovely dry weather on both Thursday and Friday.

Temperature Notes

If you are wondering how warm or cool it’ll be, you’re in luck. Temperatures during this period will remain near or slightly above normal. For today, you can expect highs in the mid to upper 80s, so it should be pretty comfortable for those heading out for weekend activities. Just don’t forget to stay hydrated and take breaks if you’re outside for extended periods.

As the sun sets tonight, temperatures will drop to the mid to upper 60s, so you might want to grab a light jacket if you plan on being out and about.

Caution Advised

20 mph, which can easily knock down tree limbs—especially those that may have already been weakened by Helene. So, if you’re driving, be cautious around road closures and give utility crews plenty of room to work safely.

Moreover, it’s wise to watch your surroundings, particularly near trees. Check overhead for any dangling branches that might be at risk of falling. Another issue to consider is the rising water levels in area rivers and creeks. Many of these bodies of water are already above normal, and rainfall from upstream is expected to keep them rising through the night. If you live near rivers or creeks, it’s best to stay alert and avoid any flooded areas.

Looking Ahead

Moving into Sunday and Monday, as that upper-level weather system continues its slow eastward migration, anticipate mostly sunny skies with daytime temperatures staying slightly above normal. It seems we’re on track for a pleasant finish to September! With dry conditions and beautiful weather just around the corner, it might be a great time to get outside and enjoy what the Midlands have to offer.

So, Columbia residents and those in the surrounding areas, let’s make the most of this calmer weather while being mindful of our surroundings. Enjoy a peaceful weekend!
