Midland Residents Gear Up for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk
Hey Midland! Are you ready to lace up your walking shoes for a great cause? This Saturday, October 19, residents from all over our vibrant city are invited to join the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, taking place at the stunning Segra Park in the BullStreet District, located at 1640 Freed St..
With over 500 participants already registered, the energy is electric, and they’re pushing hard to reach an ambitious fundraising goal of $225,000 right here in Columbia! Did you know that nearly 7 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease? It’s the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and the impact of this disease isn’t just felt by those diagnosed—over 11 million family members and friends are stepping up as caregivers. Just here in South Carolina, more than 112,500 people are living with this disease, and about 219,000 individuals are providing care for their loved ones. That’s a heavy load for our community!
A Meaningful Prelude: The Promise Garden Ceremony
Before we hit the trail for the two-mile walk, the day will kick-off with a heartfelt Promise Garden Ceremony. This special moment is all about coming together in solidarity to acknowledge and honor those who have been touched by Alzheimer’s. Participants will carry brightly colored flowers during the ceremony, and each color symbolizes a different personal connection to the disease. It’s a beautiful way to show up for one another on this challenging journey.
Why Your Support Matters
This event is not just a leisurely stroll in the park—it’s a critical moment in the collective battle against Alzheimer’s. “This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are now treatments that can change the course of the disease,” stated Ashton Houghton, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association, South Carolina Chapter. Your participation and contributions can provide essential support for families grappling with dementia today, while also funding research for future treatments and, ultimately, working towards an end to the disease.
Every dollar raised will directly benefit the operations of the Alzheimer’s Association, ensuring that families get the care and support they need while promoting advanced research and access to treatments for all who could benefit from them. It’s a cause that hits close to home for many of us, and it’s a chance to make a tangible difference in our community.
