In the bustling heart of Pelion, South Carolina, a fresh gust of Mexican culinary flair is due to breeze through town. Don Pepe’s Mexican Grill and Cantina, acclaimed for its authentic Mexican cuisine and convivial atmosphere, eagerly anticipates the opening of its brand-new restaurant building on Edmund Highway in December 2024.
Harold Rodriguez, the charismatic owner of Don Pepe’s, unveiled that the new venue would be a cane’s throw away from the old, located at 7645 Edmund Highway. For over a decade, local food enthusiasts have flocked to the vintage setting of the old Don Pepe’s—a converted split building boasting a liquor store-turned-bar and a compact grill corner.
The seasoned charm of the original venue, however, has not been without concern. As Rodriguez narrates, the old building’s advancing age was beginning to show in the unevenly poured concrete floors and spartan handicapped parking slots. The minuscule back entrance added headaches when managing deliveries and employee parking.
Fast forward to 2024 and Rodriguez’s vision for an expansive Don Pepe’s is finally coming together. The new location, excelently crafted by Lyn-Rich Construction, sprawls over an impressive 6,000 square feet and has been meticulously planned to cater to patrons’ needs and desires. The restaurant will flaunt an inviting patio, a spacious bar, and a private room apt for special gatherings. Rodriguez assures improved handicapped parking spots and a more user-friendly parking lot surface, provided by the steadfast backing of the First Community Credit Union.
As Rodriguez gears the Don Pepe’s machinery for a December opening, he paused to express his heartfelt gratitude to the citizens of Pelion and Southern Lexington County. “Our customers and this community have been nothing short of spectacular. They have embraced us from the beginning, joining us for meals when our parking lot housed less than a dozen cars. Today, we’re their go-to spot for landmark occasions: birthdays, holidays, anniversaries—you name it!” said an enthusiastic Rodriguez, “And the new building? It’s just the start of an even brighter future!”
This new chapter of Don Pepe’s Mexican Grill and Cantina is more than a tale of quintessential food, it’s a testament to enduring community spirit and ceaseless innovation in the face of challenge. Pelion and its residents, with their unfailing support, are ready for the piping hot servings of gastronomic delight that Don Pepe’s 6,000-square-foot culinary cathedral promises.
