Columbia, get ready for a night filled with uplifting melodies and heartfelt moments as renowned gospel singer Melvin Crispell III graces the stage this Wednesday, November 6, 2024. With the forecast calling for mostly cloudy skies and a high around 70°F, it’s the perfect backdrop for an evening of soul-stirring music at the Right Direction Church International Sanctuary on Broad River Road.
Crispell is no stranger to the gospel music scene. His albums, like 2020’s “I’ve Got A Testimony” and 2023’s “No Failure”, have not only delighted fans but have earned him critical acclaim, including two Grammy nominations and a Dove Award win earlier this year. For those who may not be familiar, the Dove Awards are sort of like the Grammys but for spiritual music, highlighting the very best in gospel.
His smash hit, “Wonderful Is Your Name”, has been streamed over 2 million times, a testament to his talent. But rather than seeking a spot in a large amphitheater, Crispell has chosen to perform in a more intimate setting: a local church, where his roots lie deep.
As Crispell prepares for his performance, he reflects on the significance of singing in churches. “My foundation is singing at different churches,” he explains. “These events mean a lot to me. And everybody needs Jesus, so it’s not just about the big stages and the big theaters. I like taking the time to go to local churches and share my story.”
True to his word, when he steps on stage, Crispell often puts aside his meticulous plans. “I do try to plan what I’m going to say or sing, but the leading of the Holy Spirit is subject to change,” he shared. “I just want to present gospel that is authentic in every room I enter.”
Adding to the excitement is Crispell’s latest EP, “Covered Vol. 1”, featuring six modern renditions of classic gospel songs. Tracks like “He’s Never Failed Me Yet” and “The Battle Is The Lord’s” showcase his remarkable vocal flexibility, bringing fresh energy to familiar tunes.
Choosing only six songs from the vast treasure trove of gospel classics was a daunting task. “It was almost impossible,” he chuckled. “That’s why I called it ‘Vol. 1.’ I hope we can dig deeper for ‘Vol. 2’ because there’s so much that inspired me growing up.”
Crispell emphasizes that, although he performs for many, there’s one special audience member he aims to please first and foremost: “Really, it’s an audience of one, and that’s Jesus,” he affirmed. His goal during performances is to invite attendees into his personal worship space, creating an environment filled with love and reverence.
This mission led him to be celebrated at the Dove Awards, where he won Traditional Gospel Album of the Year for “No Failure.” “That night was absolutely incredible to me,” Crispell reminisces, still filled with gratitude. “I was not expecting to win, but I’m grateful for the hard work and dedication on this project.”
With years of hard work, success, and a heart full of passion, Melvin Crispell III is ready to bring his message to the people of Columbia. “My dedication and love for music and God has not changed,” he stated. “We as artists have to inspire and lead people, inviting them into the presence of Christ.”
Mark your calendars: Melvin Crispell III will take the stage at 7 p.m. this Wednesday, November 6, as part of the church’s four-day Direction Conference. Go to directionconference.info for more details, and prepare for an extraordinary night of song and spirit that you won’t want to miss!
