Columbia, South Carolina, is all set for an incredible week filled with inspiring events to honor the legacy of the iconic civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. Mark your calendars because Monday, January 20, 2025, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and the city has a fantastic lineup planned for residents and visitors alike!
The festivities kick off with the House Music MLK Weekend, running from January 17 through 19, 2025. Every night from 5 p.m. to midnight, VFW Post 641 will transform into a lively party atmosphere featuring talented DJs like Brian Pope, Kelly Kel, Paul Howard, and Katt in the Hat. If you plan to attend, make sure to bring along some maracas, cow bells, and baby powder for an authentic dance party experience! Keep in mind that seating is limited, so arrive early to secure your spot.
On January 18, the Columbia Museum of Art will host “FAAAC Presents: The Movement” from 7 to 10 p.m. This spectacular performance will showcase amazing artists like She Pharaoh, Crystal Doomes, and Jennifer Bartell Boykin. Tickets are available for $55 for the public and just $35 for members of FAAAC. It’s a chance to enjoy an evening filled with creativity and celebration!
The MLK Celebration 5K Fitness Walk/Run will take place on January 18 at 9 a.m. at MLK Park. This event is perfect for families who want to participate together, and you can register at Strictly Running. What better way to pay tribute to Dr. King than by getting active and promoting unity?
As we move to January 20, the atmosphere shifts towards service with the MLK Day of Service. Join in on the fun by participating in a PB&J sandwich-making competition from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Davis Field, right next to the Russell House at USC. Your contributions will support local hunger-relief organizations, which is a beautiful way to honor Dr. King’s commitment to community and service.
Also on January 20, the Columbia Museum of Art invites everyone to enjoy free admission and special programming. From noon to 3 p.m., visitors can participate in a storytelling celebration and join in some lively line dancing at Boyd Plaza.
The day continues with King Day at the Dome, kicking off with an 8 a.m. prayer service at Zion Baptist Church. Then, head to the SC State House at 10 a.m. for a powerful rally featuring keynote speaker Jamie Harrison. This is a fantastic opportunity to come together as a community and honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of equality.

Later in January, the City of Columbia Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Service will take place on January 25, beginning with a wreath-laying ceremony at 3:06 p.m., followed by a service at 4 p.m. This will be led by Columbia College President Dr. John H. Dozier at MLK Park.
Lastly, don’t miss the Columbia Urban League’s Annual Breakfast on January 20, where attendees will gather at Brookland Banquet and Conference Center at 8 a.m. This 28th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Keeping the Legacy Alive Breakfast will feature keynote speaker Dr. Kim D. Moore, the Superintendent of Richland County School District 2. It is sure to be an inspiring way to start the day.
