Columbia, SC – This morning, while most of us were waking up to the steady rhythm of rain pattering on our windows, singer/songwriter Marshall Brown was also making some waves in the local music scene. The weather might keep many indoors, but Brown’s latest release, “Nesting,” promises a musical journey that’s worth the listen.
With cloudy skies set to linger and showers expected throughout the day, temperatures are rising to a pleasant 74°F. In the spirit of the rainy day, what better way to embrace the gloom than with some soulful tunes? While the forecast predicts a 100% chance of rain, Marshall Brown had his own storm brewing when he wrote the EP. He describes himself as being “a (expletive) mess” during the creation phase as he grappled with the aftermath of a long-term relationship that unraveled during the pandemic.
Marshall Brown’s “Nesting” is not just an album; it’s an odyssey of lost love and self-reflection that mirrors the ups and downs of real life. After experiencing a tumultuous relationship, he found himself diving into a creative wave. “It was just coming out of me like sweat,” he remarked about the songwriting phase. However, after that initial burst of emotion, he realized he needed time to heal before revisiting his work.
More than a year later, with newfound insights about himself and a budding relationship, he took another look at those early drafts of “Nesting.” “When I started working on these songs again, I really started building the recordings and completely recontextualized those songs,” Brown explained. The result is an album that reflects a fresh perspective and a new sound, transitioning from heartache to hope.
The EP opens with “Peace of Mine,” where Brown artfully weaves themes of distress and lamentation into a catchy melody. It’s a song about family distress that transforms into a love song with each verse. His creativity shines through, with lyrics that allow for moments of clarity amidst the chaos: “Wanna let the sun have a break and let my spirit shine.”
As the EP unfolds, the track “This Second Bird” stands out as a playful nod to one of Brown’s earlier songs, “First Bird.” By incorporating the call of the white-throated sparrow—his girlfriend’s favorite bird—he brings a personal touch that adds depth to the track. “It just personalized it so much more,” said Brown.
Then there’s “Sad Pianos: Spirits in the Soundboard,” an intriguing instrumental that hits a haunting note. This track, born during his healing phase, features a melody he stumbled upon at his girlfriend’s house and finds a cozy home on the EP. “And so it was really meaningful for me to throw (‘Sad Pianos’) on there with these other songs with these lyrics I’d written before,” he reflected.
While Brown primarily took charge of writing, producing, and recording the EP himself, he collaborated closely with Dylan Dickerson, a fellow musician and owner of Comfort Monk, where “Nesting” was released. Dickerson praised Brown’s evolution and the immersive quality of the album, highlighting its diverse production styles that flirt with ambient, synth, and ethereal sounds.
As the rain continues to pour, Columbia finds solace in the heartfelt melodies of “Nesting.” This release marks a significant moment in Brown’s artistic journey—mature, introspective, and captivating. But don’t think he’s done yet! Brown is already busy crafting his next album, proving that he’s ready for whatever weather patterns life might throw his way.
