Exciting New Luxury Apartment Complex on the Horizon for Columbia!
Columbia, S.C. — The city’s much-anticipated luxury apartment complex is finally moving closer to reality! Plans for the new development in our historic district could see it grow from an already impressive 250 beds to a whopping 320 beds! This news comes as a breath of fresh air to residents, and it’s all happening at the former site of the Jim Moore Cadillac dealership located at 2222 Main Street.
Originally given the green light back in January, Commonwealth Properties, the developer behind the project, is now set to present their request for even more beds to the Columbia Planning Commission this Thursday. Such growth would not only modernize the area, but it could also breathe new life into a space that has long been an eyesore for residents.
A Neighborhood’s Longing for Change
Denise Wellman, President of the Cottontown Historic Neighborhood Association, has been a vocal supporter of this development. She expressed her frustration over the abandoned Cadillac site, sharing that it’s been a blot on the neighborhood for as long as she can remember. “This property has been allowed to be an eyesore in our capital city for far too long,” she noted, highlighting how the area has desperately needed something transformative.
But it’s not just about looks; Wellman also believes that the increased density could bring economic benefits to the area. “We believe that this development will be the anchor to really grow as a gateway to this area of Main Street.” With more people residing nearby, Wellman is hopeful that businesses, including a much-needed grocery store, will finally consider setting up shop in what has been referred to as a grocery store food desert.
A Luxe Lifestyle Awaits
So, what can potential residents expect from these luxury apartments? The complex will feature four stories of modern amenities that cater to today’s lifestyles. According to a proposal submitted to the Planning Commission, the feature list is certainly impressive: a state-of-the-art fitness center, a pet spa and even a rooftop dog park for furry friends to enjoy! There’s also a co-working space for those who work from home, bicycle storage and repair facilities, and let’s not forget the fabulous rooftop clubroom and game room, complete with two spectacular rooftop decks!
Johnathan Chambers, the Land Development Coordinator for Columbia, has been closely reviewing the plans. From a staff standpoint, he assured that most of the site plan meets necessary comments and regulations. “From what we’ve seen, it looks promising,” Chambers said, pointing out that increased bed numbers will optimize the project’s success.
What’s Next for the Project?
Thursday’s Planning Commission meeting, scheduled for 4:00 PM, will not only review the plans but will also allow for public comments. Hundreds of voices can be heard, either applauding or voicing concerns about the new construction. Key topics will include setbacks, how the building integrates along Main Street, parking spaces, and landscaping designs.
Should the Planning Commission approve this exciting expansion, the proposal will then head to the Design Development Review Commission next week. The community is eagerly awaiting what promises to be a significant addition to Columbia’s landscape!
So mark your calendars—Thursday might just bring some exciting news for Columbia and its residents. The buzz surrounding this development is palpable, and many share the hope that it will usher in a new era for this historic district!
