Behind the Scenes with Will Loftis
If you haven’t heard of Loftis yet, it’s time to get familiar. Growing up in Irmo and training at the renowned local dance studio, Southern Strutt, Loftis has made significant strides in the entertainment world as an assistant choreographer for “Wicked” and its upcoming sequel, set to grace theaters in 2025. “I always knew he had a special gift since he was young,” said Leah Evans, an instructor at Southern Strutt and close friend of Loftis. “His success is so deserving.”
On “Wicked”, Loftis had the incredibly important job of teaching the musical’s choreography, wonderfully directed by Christopher Scott. He hasn’t shied away from sharing behind-the-scenes moments with his 54,000 Instagram followers, giving fans a fascinating glimpse into the making of the film. From candid snaps of rehearsals with superstar Ariana Grande and comedian Bowen Yang to heartfelt moments on set, his posts have set social media abuzz!
All That Jazz: Loftis Takes the Spotlight
But Loftis’s partnership with Grande doesn’t end on the yellow brick road. He was also chosen to choreograph the music video for her latest single, “yes, and?”, from her new album titled “Eternal Sunshine.” This video elegantly showcases Loftis’s style and creativity, combining jazz inspirations with modern dance—a true love letter to his dance roots. He described the project as a nod to jazz and a tribute to every dance teacher he’s ever had. Rolling Stone even praised his intricate choreography!
Loftis continued his collaboration with Grande at the star-studded 2024 Met Gala, further solidifying his position in the industry. Not just stopping there, he even contributed to an ad for Swarovski crystals, showcasing his versatility and appeal in the competitive world of choreography.
From Irmo to the Big Screen
Although Loftis’s star is rapidly rising, he is no stranger to hard work and dedication. His illustrious resume already includes notable projects like the rom-com “No Strings Attached” and popular television shows like “Glee” and “So You Think You Can Dance?”. He was also a backup dancer alongside Taylor Swift during a vibrant performance of “Shake it Off.” Quite an impressive journey from the dance floors of Irmo!
A Community Celebration
Evans shared how Loftis remains connected to his roots, often returning to Southern Strutt to teach classes and inspire the next generation of dancers. “The younger dancers are just in awe,” she exclaimed. To show their support, around 30 of Loftis’ former teachers, students, friends, and family gathered together in Columbia to watch “Wicked” on opening night.
As Loftis appeared on screen, the energy was electrifying; they cheered, clapped, and even shed a few happy tears. “We all cried, sang along, clapped and screamed when we saw Will on the big screen,” Evans proudly recalled. “This is now my all-time favorite movie!”
