CHAPIN, S.C. – Hold onto your hats, folks! Lexington School District Five just took a huge leap into the future with a whopping $240 million referendum that promises to transform the way students learn and access education across the district. Can you believe it? After many years of planning and dreaming, the community has come together to show overwhelming support for this essential project!
On Election Day, out of 55,960 residents who cast their votes, a substantial 39,612 supported the referendum, while 16,348 decided against it. That’s a striking 70 percent in favor! Superintendent Akil E. Ross couldn’t hide his excitement during the press conference held on Friday, sharing that they are ready to transition from a district plan to what he called a “people’s project.” Imagine the possibilities!
Superintendent Ross pointed out that it’s been a whopping 16 years since the district had a bond referendum. The idea for this ambitious project started last August, and now the community’s support will put transformative changes into motion. The funds will not only help with upgrades to facilities but will also work towards building new schools. One of the exciting highlights will be a brand new Dutch Fork Elementary School, along with new classroom wings at Lake Murray and Chapin Elementary Schools.
Superintendent Ross outlined some critical improvements that are on the horizon, focusing on safety and pedagogy. Currently, about 24 classrooms at those schools are separate from their main buildings, raising safety concerns. With the new funding, the district aims to develop 12 new security rooms equipped with a cutting-edge weapon detection system. Plus, every school will see an upgrade in security cameras to ensure students and staff feel safe while learning.
The initiative doesn’t stop at safety. District officials also confirmed funds will cover necessary repairs to eight schools, focusing on important elements like HVAC systems, roofing, and renovated restrooms. These improvements mean a more comfortable and enriching environment for students and staff alike!
Excitingly, this funding will also fuel innovative instructional projects. Students had their voices heard during the planning phase, and it seems they’re in for a treat! Ross emphasized the importance of preparing students for their futures. This means introducing AI and digital solutions into classrooms, improving facilities for career technical education, and even introducing a new theater at Chapin High School! The focus on entrepreneurship at Irmo High School is sure to spark interest in many young minds.
As if that wasn’t exciting enough, Ross discussed the concept of a “Citizen’s Advisory Review Team,” aimed at encouraging community members to engage more actively in the delivery of these projects. Isn’t that a great way for everyone to stay connected and informed about what’s happening in the district?
Now for the nitty-gritty: how does the district plan to finance this massive endeavor? They will take on debt but plan to pay it back within the next 20 years without increasing taxes for residents. That’s a relief for many! The tax increase threshold will only be crossed if a future request exceeds $400 million.
With so many changes on the horizon, residents of Chapin can look forward to a bright future for their children and the education system. Stay tuned for more updates as this project unfolds – it’s shaping up to be quite the journey!
