Irmo High School, located in Irmo, South Carolina, has welcomed a new face to head their varsity basketball team this week. In an announcement made by Lexington-Richland School District Five, Alex Quillen steps into the shoes of the legendary coach, Tim Whipple, marking a new era for Irmo basketball. Quillen, a proud Irmo graduate, has played beginning for the esteemed school’s 2011 and 2013 state championship teams and has also previously served as the school’s JV coach and assistant varsity coach.
Quillen replaces Coach Tim Whipple, a remarkable figure in Irmo basketball, who led the team to 11 state titles in his over 40-year tenure on the bench. Whipple’s impact has left a deep imprint on the school, making him an inspiration and a benchmark for future coaches.
Upon his appointment, Quillen expressed his deep attachment and gratitude to the school community. He said, “I am honored to have the opportunity to take over the Irmo High School basketball program. This is, and always has been, a dream job for me. Being an Irmo graduate, I have seen first-hand how amazing this community can be and how special this basketball program is. We want to win at the highest level and prepare these young men to be successful on and off the floor. I look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence we have here at Irmo.”
This latest development marks a significant transition for Irmo High School as it looks to build on its proud legacy and continue its tradition of top-tier basketball under new leadership. Students, faculty, and the entire community can expect a new energy and shared learning as Quillen takes the helm. Furthermore, as an alumnus with a strong bond to the school and a personal investment in its success, Quillen will undoubtedly bring a unique perspective and a drive to uphold the high standards set by his predecessor.
Together with Quillen’s leadership, the success of the varsity basketball team will also rely on the support and enthusiasm of the larger school community. From the students, parents, alumni, faculty, to the fans, everyone will play a part in fostering a positive and dynamic learning environment that promotes competitiveness, sportsmanship and camaraderie as the team strives for continued excellence on and off the court.
