Hey there, Lexington! If you’ve been looking for a fresh outdoor spot to soak up some sunshine, we have some fantastic news for you. After much anticipation, the Old Mill Pond Trail is officially set to open this Friday, September 13th! Get ready to lace up those walking shoes and enjoy the beautiful scenery right in the heart of our town.
Join us at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, as the Town of Lexington will hold a special ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate this exciting event. It’s happening at 711 East Main Street, and everyone is invited! Mayor Hazel Livingston and members of the town council will be there to kick things off with some inspirational words about the trail. Come for the speeches, and stay for the festivities!
The Old Mill Pond Trail isn’t just any walking path; oh no! This lovely 1.15-mile paved loop wraps around the picturesque Lexington Mill Pond, featuring charming bridges, scenic outlooks, and cozy seating areas where you can pause, relax, and absorb the beauty of nature. Whether you’re out for a peaceful stroll, a brisk jog, or a family bike ride, this trail offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Now, you might be wondering, “How did we get here?” This trail has been in the making for a while, originally part of the 2012 Vision Plan for the Town of Lexington. The aim was to create a sustainable walking trail around the pond, but as we all know, life sometimes throws a curveball. In 2015, a major flood hit our area, breaching many local dams, including the Old Mill’s dam. This setback left the pond empty for nearly nine years!
However, the community didn’t give up hope. Thanks to a remarkable public/private partnership, the **Old Mill Pond Trail** was reborn. It’s a true testament to what we can accomplish when we come together, and now we have a beautiful new space to enjoy and cherish. Isn’t that just wonderful?
With the weather cooperating beautifully this week, expect abundant sunshine and a high of 83°F on Friday! A stroll around the pond sounds perfect, especially with the gentle ENE winds at 5 to 10 mph. Whether you’re grabbing a coffee and strolling solo or bringing the kids along, the clear skies and mild temperatures will make for a delightful day outdoors.
So mark your calendars and bring your friends and family! This ribbon-cutting ceremony will be a great opportunity to celebrate our community’s resilience and the beauty of nature we’re bringing back to life. If you have any stories or memories from before the flood, or if you’re just excited about the new trail, we’d love to hear from you! Your enthusiasm is what makes Lexington such a special place to live.
As we open the Old Mill Pond Trail, let’s cherish these moments and the beauty our town has to offer. We can’t wait to see you there!
