Good morning, Lexington! If you’re looking for a fun way to enjoy the great outdoors, mark your calendars for Friday, September 13. That’s when our beautiful town will officially unveil the Old Mill Pond Trail with a delightful ribbon-cutting ceremony. The celebration starts at 10:30 a.m. at 711 East Main Street, and everyone is invited to join in the festivities!
The Old Mill Pond Trail is not just any walking path; it is a spectacular 1.15-mile paved loop that gently winds around the scenic Lexington Mill Pond. This fantastic trail offers a unique experience, complete with charming bridges, cozy outlooks, and inviting seating areas where you can rest and soak in the beauty around you.
Think of it as your very own nature escape right in the heart of Lexington! Perfect for walking, jogging, or just enjoying a leisurely stroll with family and friends, this new trail is set to be a popular spot for everyone who loves spending time outdoors.
The journey to bring the Old Mill Pond Trail to life has been quite an adventure. Dating back to the town’s 2012 Vision Plan, community leaders envisioned a serene walking trail around the pond. However, nature had its own plans when the 2015 flood struck, causing the breach of various local dams, including our Old Mill’s earthen dam. For nearly nine years, the pond remained empty, but the spirit of Lexington did not waver.
Thanks to a remarkable public/private partnership, the long-awaited trail has finally come to fruition! It’s a true testament to how our community can come together and overcome challenges while preserving the beauty of our natural landscapes.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, you can expect several special guests, including our very own Lexington Mayor Hazel Livingston and other members of the town council, who will share a few words about the project and what it means for our community. There may even be some refreshments to sweeten the deal! So, grab your family, a couple of friends, or even your furry companion and head out to show your support.
And speaking of heading out, it looks like the weather is going to be just perfect for the event, with abundant sunshine and a high near 85°F. Though there’ll be some clouds, those light northeastern winds blowing in at 5 to 10 mph will keep you feeling nice and comfortable, even if you’re dressed for a morning walk.
Don’t let this opportunity pass you by! This new trail is not just a walking path; it’s a chance to reconnect with nature, make new friends, and enjoy everything that’s great about living in Lexington. Whether you’re an avid walker, a family looking for the perfect weekend activity, or simply someone who loves beautiful views, the Old Mill Pond Trail is sure to be a hit. Let’s come together to celebrate this wonderful addition to our community!
See you there on September 13! Remember to bring your smiles and let’s enjoy a lovely morning together exploring our new trail!
