LEXINGTON — On a beautiful sunny day filled with excitement and community spirit, residents of Lexington gathered on September 13, 2024 to officially cut the ribbon on the long-awaited Old Mill Pond Trail. This exciting new addition is a 1.15-mile walking trail designed to offer families a lovely space to connect with nature and enjoy outdoor activities.
Lexington Mayor Hazel Livingston couldn’t have been happier at the event, expressing her joy and highlighting the importance of community spaces. “I’m so excited,” she shared with a warm smile. “I think it’s a positive. Places like this encourage relationships and community.” Her enthusiasm certainly resonated with the crowd, which included families, local officials, and eager outdoor enthusiasts.
The journey to the opening of the Old Mill Pond Trail began back in 2012, when it was included in Lexington’s “Vision Plan.” This plan emphasized the goal of maintaining the downtown area while encouraging intentional and sustainable development. However, the project faced significant setbacks when the area experienced historic rainfall in October 2015, leading to catastrophic flooding that delayed progress. The town witnessed around 20 inches of rain in just five days, which caused the failure of 36 regulated dams, including the one at Old Mill Pond.
Despite the challenges, the completion of the trail is a beacon of resilience for Lexington and is part of broader efforts to revitalize the community. Recently constructed spaces, such as the Icehouse Amphitheater which opened in 2016, and the newly renovated Virginia Hylton Park, have become beloved destinations for locals and visitors alike. The Icehouse has quickly made a name for itself as a go-to venue for concerts and events.
Council member Gavin Smith also spoke about the positive impact that green spaces like this will have on life in Lexington. He stated, “Nearly every time I speak with our citizens, they share their excitement about the improvements we’re making to our green spaces. This new trail at Old Mill Pond is a perfect example of how we’re enhancing the beauty and quality of life in our town.”
The Old Mill Pond Trail provides not only a means for people to enjoy a brisk walk, jog, or bike ride but also a picturesque spot for families to come together for some quality outdoor time. The trail is nestled in a scenic area that invites walkers to connect with both nature and the community, making it an excellent addition to the town.
As construction concluded and the ribbon was cut, residents couldn’t help but envision what adventures lie ahead. It’s clear that the Old Mill Pond Trail has a promising future in bringing the community together and enriching the outdoor experience for everyone in Lexington.
With a mild weather forecast calling for cloudy skies and a high of 79°F for the week ahead, many are looking forward to enjoying their new trail. And while there might be a slight chance of rain, it’s certainly not enough to dampen the spirits of a community ready to enjoy their fresh, green space.
As we take a step forward into a new chapter for Lexington, it’s heartening to see the community rallying behind initiatives that promote both health and happiness. This could just be the beginning of more green spaces to come!
